As a coach, you hope your players get some penetration with at least 5 seconds left and that didn't happen. He didn't think Barton would get that good of a look. While I can understand not calling it at that point, we still had the chance to win. The fact that Barton made it is what makes it bad. If Barton air balls, then he gets criticized too. Big players have to make plays, and Stokes couldn't finish. We could have easily had 3 more wins if our players would have executed late and overcome the bad coaching. Bad coaching + weak players = disappointing year.
The question now becomes whom Hart will turn to at season's end? Shaka Smart isn't coming here, and I'm not so sure Howland is a safe bet, either. As long as Cheek is resting his rear end in the office, Bruce Pearl is not a realistic option at this point.
Make no mistake that I would rather have Bruce back but Howland is probably the best college coach currently available. I read the SI article that you reference and 11 players did leave the team between 2008-2012 and it was said that he had turned a blind eye to a player named Reeves Nelson that was bullying some of his teammates. So he comes with some warts but so does Bruce. Howland also turned around the Pitt program in a remarkable hurry. They won 11 games his first year but then 28 and 29 his third and fourth years. He also successfully recruited Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, Darren Collison, Jordan Farmar, Arron Afflalo and Jrue Holliday just to name a few. UCLA went 10-19 in Steve Lavin's last season in 2003 but Howland made three final fours. He has no apparent ties to the southeast and might not even be interested but if we can't have Bruce back I doubt we could do better.I said it in another thread, Howland destroyed UCLA basketball. He won early because players went to UCLA because of the name. Later years, players just quit the team because of Howland. Former players hated Howland. I believe SI wrote an article about how disconnected Howland was from the team and former payers. Why would we want this?
