Curiosity led me...

This is all good stuff. Regardless, we have this conversation every year when it comes to recruiting. If we have a great year, we talk about all the 4 and 5 star recruits and how we are going to be great for years to come. If we have a bad year, everyone either says the sky is falling or says that stars dont matter.
I think a better way to evaluate is what percentage of 5 star recruits make an all conference team vs 4, 3, and 2 stars.

a little nugget to nibble on regarding the utility of recruiting rankings:

posted by riversetvol on the Outer board a day or two ago:

They (USA Today) have combined the rankings from Scout and Rivals from the last 5 recruiting years prior to yesterday(02-06)

1. USC 4
2. Oklahoma 5.5
3. Georgia 6.3
4. Florida 9.1
5. LSU 9.2
6. Texas 9.2
7. Michigan 10
8. Tennessee 10.4
9. Ohio State 13.8
10. Auburn 15

2 stats immediately pop out:

1. Recruiting rankings actually are significant as every NC from the last 5 years are in the Top 9

2. There is only one team in the Top 10 that had a losing season during this 5 year period and that team also is the only one that didn't play in a BCS game during the 5 years. Any guess who that might be?

And after being in the Top 8 recruiting for the last 5 years with no BCS game you have to wonder after our dismal recruiting years of 06 and 08 what the future holds

Also throw in Auburn went undefeated and didn't get the chance to play for the NC.

I can only speak for myself of course but I would have been every bit as surprised at my findings if we had signed the #1 class.
