Curious how many of you would like to see Bruce Pearl as our next basketball coach.

I know for a fact he’s gotten a few non P5 offers and turned them down. I don’t think it’s the most unlikely scenario in the world that they hand him the keys if he stays with Bruce the next 6 years.

I’ve heard Bruce has pitched it already to a very cold reception. That could change if BP wins big (ahead of Alabama) before he leaves. Sad thing is most of Bruce’s relationships end bad.

If Barnes retired after this season, I'd personally have no issue with him coming back here. His NCAA show cause was a massive hypocritical joke and was aided by Hamilton machinations. We see what the NCAA was really willing to allow when a school told them "no, we aren't working with you". Frank Haith did a million times worse than Pearl and got 8 games.

I'm always baffled by the anger some people have towards him here. He was great for the program and rescued UT basketball.

I like beating him now because he's not UT's coach. He's actually a high level coach as Auburn was as big a cluster as UT when he took over there. He'd recruit well and we'd continue winning 20+ a season under him.

That said, I'm all for Barnes coaching here until he doesn't feel like it any more and I'd trust White to find a good replacement whomever it was.

BP is 62 only 6 years younger than RB so no I wouldn’t want Pearl back. When RB decides to retire he and White need to work together to hire his replacement.

CRB’s offense running on 1-1/2 cylinders today, and Pearl still can’t beat UT? You really want him back in Knoxville?!

My dislike for him stems from the way he lied, tried to get Craft to lie, and then tried to feign remorse only after he was caught. And then, if that weren't enough, he took a giant dump on his assistants and their families while negotiating himself a fat buyout. He's a piece of crap human being, VFL or not.

Every coach in the NCAA lies all the time it seems. It's a dirty sport and his "sin" was quite a bit less than what has came out about most coaches in basketball since then, including those who are in the Hall of Fame and those who polish NCAA title trophies at blue blood schools. It was a dumb thing to lie about but it is what it is. I don't know him enough to decide if he's a "piece of crap" human being or not. But a lot of people are in that category if they are judged by their worst momemts.

Curious how many of you would like to see Bruce Pearl as our next basketball coach. I’ll start by raising my hand. Pearl put Tennessee basketball back on the map which was no easy feat. I met him shortly after he was hired in 2005 at the Reebok ABCD camp in Hackensack, New Jersey. O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love were the big prospects there. Tubby Smith, Jim Boeheim and other big name coaches were there sitting in the stands at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Told my wife “look… It’s Bruce Pearl sitting up there by himself.“ We plopped down next to him and started a conversation. He couldn’t have been more engaging and passionate about Tennessee despite having just been hired. I told him how we camped out in line for Kentucky tickets during the early 80s with Dale Ellis, Michael Brooks and crew and how wild Stokely Athletic Center was in those days. He looked me dead in the eye and said “I’m going to do everything in my power to get it back to that.“ I could tell he absolutely meant it. You know what? He did. He actually did one better making poorly-designed, acoustically-challenged, non-intimidating TBA a home court advantage. He also knows how to coach deep into the NCAA tournament. Enough water has passed under the bridge. Bruce Pearl should succeed (the fairly-soon retiring) Rick Barnes. Same salary as Barnes is reasonable.. He’s a VFL. Can’t have much more skin here than he had. He had hot chicks on his boat on the Tennessee River and his wife divorced him and turned gangsta naming her hair salon “Alimony.“. Sounds like a very Tennessee thing.

Posts like this is what makes the basketball forum insufferable at times.

Move on and get over it.

My god. We‘ve won back to back games against Sweaty Bruce and his disciples still come out of the woodwork clamoring for him to come back the day we beat him. Just truly insane behavior.

They can’t pass up any opportunity to trumpet the genius of dear leader

It isn't the fact that he lied...that's bad enough in its own right, and you're right, a lot of coaches do it...it's the faux sincerity behind the idea that he suddenly had some crisis of conscience and wanted to come clean, and then nearly everything he did following it. We have no reason to bring him back. We aren't desperate.

I have no doubt he never coaches here again. But I wouldn't jump off the Gay Street bridge like many here apparently would. I've lived through too many lean years to turn down a proven winner.

Not directing this at you, but in general for many here. Liking and appreciating Pearl for what he did here and thinking he's a good coach doesn't mean one must also think Barnes is a bad coach and that he's not appreciated. I don't understand that mentality. A few posters here are just exceptionally triggered by the mention of his name. I actually see far more of that than I do pro-Pearl sentiment here.

I agree with all of that save for the last sentiment, to an extent.

There are several who, like you said, hate the very mention of his name, but they are for the most part, the same handful who routinely make that opinion known and are here year-round in the BB forum, so it seems to be more pronounced.

There are, IMO, far more who love him and wish for his return, but aren't quite as ever-present in this forum. They usually show up when we play Auburn (especially when we lose to AU), when Auburn advances further in the postseason, or whenever we struggle. For them, the only answer to our coaching question is Bruce Pearl, and will be until the day he dies.

So I'd say the physical numbers lean heavily toward the Pearl supporters, but you just hear from them far less often. I'm with you...if he, hypothetically, somehow ended up back here as our coach, I'd still support the program, and I know he loves Tennessee. He wouldn't be my pick as I think there are more options outside of Pearl or failure. Some of our fans can't escape that mindset, nor the past, though, and will never accept that other good options exist, and we currently have one.
