Just in case anyone is curious, I've calculated the current BCS standings, as of 10/12. Note that two of the computer polls (Massey and Wolfe) do not yet release their results, so the computer data is based on the others that are available. Given that the computer portion has such small weight in comparison to the polls, however, I doubt that those other computers would affect the standings.

1 Ohio State 0.990
2 USC 0.946
3 Florida 0.906
4 Michigan 0.883
5 West Virginia 0.727
6 Louisville 0.711
7 Notre Dame 0.705
8 Texas 0.705
9 Tennessee 0.671
10 Auburn 0.608
11 California 0.593
12 Clemson 0.496

Massey is available, and the Vols are ranked 6th in it. Jerry Palm at collegebcs.com has calculated the BCS like this:

3 Florida 6-0 0.9095
4 Michigan 6-0 0.8798
5 Louisville 5-0 0.7194
6 Notre Dame 5-1 0.7029
7 Tennessee 5-1 0.6962
8 Texas 5-1 0.6940
9 West Virginia 5-0 0.6917
10 Auburn 5-1 0.6137
11 California 5-1 0.5841
12 Clemson 5-1 0.4856

I did some checking, and Wolfe has been almost identicial to Sagarin the past few seasons with a few exceptions. If you recalculate the BCS formula inserting Sagarin for Wolfe (since Wolfe has not released a poll yet), Texas and Louisville swap places as do Iowa and Clemson....

1 Ohio State 0.9862
2 Southern Cal 0.9491
3 Florida 0.9095
4 Michigan 0.8798
5 Texas 0.7051
6 Notre Dame 0.7018
7 Tennessee 0.7007
8 Louisville 0.6872
9 WVU 0.6639
10 Auburn 0.6215
11 Cal 0.5864
12 Iowa 0.4744
13 Clemson 0.4723
14 Boise State 0.3938
15 Arkansas 0.3681

Isn't there some automatic bid for teams not winning their conference that finish in the top 8?

Or did I dream that the rule isn't only in place for the Notre Dame's and Boise State's of the world.

I'm not sure, but I know it at least has been top 4 is in. top 6 is in if they are a conference champion. (so I think if you are a co champion who lost on the bid due to the auto going to someone else, you can still get an auto bid here) If a mid major is top 12 they are in for sure.
If a mid major is number 16 or better, and they are higher ranked than at leas one other major conference champion, they are in. If notre dame is at least 8, they are in.

There's no way Notre Dame should be ranked ahead of UT in the BCS, but they will be. The BCS, along with the rest of the universe, wants to make love to Notre Dame... so this shouldn't surprise any of us.

The rule for Notre Dame is... if they finish in the top 8, they are in a BCS bowl automatically.

Assuming the Vols can win out they should move up a minimum of 3 spots due to OhSt-Mich, USC-ND. and W.Va-L'ville. It's very likely that everyone ahead of the Vols would be a BCS conference champion which would really put UT in the catbird's seat for an at-large.

What's ironic is that ND's love is coming from the computers this year, not necessarily from the polls.

Yeah, the polls are being more realistic right now... but don't be fooled, the love for Notre Dame comes from everywhere. It will drown you if you don't avoid it.

Ah, I couldn't find the current Massey ratings. And with only four computers, I didn't have a high and low to throw out. So the other two computers will have a little more weight than I thought, because Tennessee in particular got shafted by one of the computers--that one will be thrown out now.

The ND lovefest has already given way to the OhioSt. lovefest. I don't know what it is about the Big10(11) + ND but it seems like everyone in the whole region has to get behind one team. If ND loses to USC, ND will be off the radar for the BCS.

I wish this statement was correct, but I'm not so sure. If Notre Dame finishes with losses to only Michigan and USC, I bet they will find a way to get Notre Dame into a BCS bowl. Three losses, however, will take them completely out of the picture.

Can someone explain to me how Texas is top 10 much less top 5? I mean ND is bad. They got smashed by a team that left Vandy respectable in the morning.

But Texas... Good grief. They played one decent team and lost. I don't count OU. They got beat by Oregon immediately before Cal embarassed Oregon.

I know there is alot of football left but Texas and ND being rated so highly is a complete farce.
