Man oh man if these are for real, the BCS is gonna keep taking shots from everyone. For some iddy bitty (million dollar) reason they keep getting up.
NOTRE DAME AHEAD OF US.
There's no way Notre Dame should be ranked ahead of UT in the BCS, but they will be. The BCS, along with the rest of the universe, wants to make love to Notre Dame... so this shouldn't surprise any of us.
The rule for Notre Dame is... if they finish in the top 8, they are in a BCS bowl automatically.
Just about every computer ranking has a component that includes its opponents' record and opponents' opponents' record similar to the old BCS SOS calculation. Notre Dame is ranked high, for now, due to its competition's record. Notre Dame is currently ranked 6th in SOS. Tennessee is actually ranked higher in SOS at 4th.
Here is an interesting side note, especially since Billingsley has the Vols rated at 15th.... 8 spots below California. 14 of Billingsley's top 15 teams -- their ranking is dropped from the BCS calculation for either being the lowest or highest ranking. Its a safeguard the BCS gurus put in to make sure that one computer doesn't stray too far from the other 5. However, I don't think I ever remember 14-of-15 being dropped like that. Maybe the BCS should rethink whether Billingsley deserves to be in the BCS?
Just in case anyone is curious, I've calculated the current BCS standings, as of 10/12. Note that two of the computer polls (Massey and Wolfe) do not yet release their results, so the computer data is based on the others that are available. Given that the computer portion has such small weight in comparison to the polls, however, I doubt that those other computers would affect the standings.
1 Ohio State 0.990
2 USC 0.946
3 Florida 0.906
4 Michigan 0.883
5 West Virginia 0.727
6 Louisville 0.711
7 Notre Dame 0.705
8 Texas 0.705
9 Tennessee 0.671
10 Auburn 0.608
11 California 0.593
12 Clemson 0.496
Let the debate begin!
ND's agreement with the BCS is if they finish in the top 8 the get a bowl berth. The payout however is only 4-5 million, however the years they don't qualify they get 2 million. What I really hate about ND is they do not belong to a conference. Because of this, they made a deal with the BCS that if they finish 8th or higher in the BCS then they will get into a BCS bowl. This means that ND will get to keep all the money from the Bowl invite (I think around $14 million for a BCS bowl). Now if Tennessee gets into a BCS bowl, they will have to divide the $14 million amoung the other SEC schools since they belong to that conference. How unfair is that.

I will give them credit, they do have a schedule.

That was true in the past, but not anymore. Notre Dame recently switched from an all or nothing deal to one that is very similar to a team that is in a conference. They receive a guaranteed $1 million each year from the BCS and earn $4.5 million for a BCS berth.
