Cutcliffe on Heupel

He certainly negotiated with Hamilton to fill the vacancy that emerged when Kiffin left (and it's a crying shame he wasn't hired). Is there evidence that he would have been willing to replace Fulmer after the 2008 season? That seems unlikely to me.

Or.........he was unwilling to work under Hamilton. Smart man.

Cut doesn't have any reason to be anything to Tennessee other than an ambassador for the time he was here. His record speaks for itself and as a Special Assistant to the Commissioner for football realations I'm sure he enjoys a more lucrative lifestyle than whatever he could be for an individual team. I appreciate his service to UT and what he brings to the table. Go Vols!

Was this part of your post addressed to me? I wrote about a time when Cutcliffe still had a dozen years of coaching ahead of him.

Don't leave out the first part. Cut not wanting to work under Hamilton after Hamilton cut the legs out from under Fulmer is a real reason. The second part is what he is to the program now. David Cutcliffe wasn't about to take a job taken away from Coach Fulmer at that point in time. Smart move. Later? I don't think that would have added anything to his legacy at UT. It was a business decision.

Likewise with Peyton Manning being any kind of coach or anything other than an ambassador to his alma mater. What is there to gain?

Heupel is a better QB coach than Cut
Little early to make this statement imo. Cut has almost 40 years of developing qb’s, some who were pretty pedestrian from a talent/ ratings standpoint when he got ahold of them. Heupel has coached a Heisman winner and top draft pick, but Cut coached 2 Heisman runner ups, two top draft picks, a #3 pick and many more guys who he developed nicely.

Cut never did a development job comparable to what Heupel did with Hooker. He doesn’t get credit for Peyton. He would have been great anywhere he went.

Heupel did a great job with Hooker, but people dont give Hooker enough credit to begin with. He was never a bad QB. At his worst he was average, at his best, he nearly won a Heisman.

As far as Cut & Heupel. . . take Cut's 7 best years and put them next to Heupel's best 7 (as far as QB development is concerned) and Heupel is pretty close. However, Cut has been doing it for a lot longer and has always been highly successful. Heupel has a ways to go before he can stand toe to toe with Cut's career achievements.

I really like the part where he talked @ Heupel's practice. That's where the development is coming from. When someone with that pedigree talks that way, then we are in great shape.

I cannot remember the timing, but I thought Coach Cutcliffe’s heart attack played into his career decisions when we were looking for a coach.

Also, to echo previous comments, I have heard other ACC coaches comment on the fact that he is “one of the good guys”, meaning a high character member of the coaching profession.

Cut should have been the pick to follow Fulmer. He wanted it. But we had Hamilton as the AD and the rest is history.
With all respect you’ve got 20/20 hindsight bias. Cut was our past not our future. Kiffin was a HUGE splash hire who energized this client base like no other HC had ever done not even Johnny. Landing Bryce Brown was epic.

We would not have wandered in the wilderness for over a decade if Hamilton had been smart enough to write NO USC in Kiffin’s contract.

But he wasn’t, Kiffin bolted, tried to take half our class on his way out the door with coach O, yada yada and the rest is history.

Did Kiffin turn out to be a sleazeball team hopping opportunist? Yeah but that was all post TN. Doesn’t mean in any way shape or form he wasn’t the RIGHT HIRE to begin with.

Just my .02.

Uh, Johnny coming back to Tennessee after winning the NC was BIG. Major league BIG. Magazine headline big. Kiffin's hiring was not comparable. I live through both and nothing was bigger than when Johnny came marching home. Not even honorable mention close.

No he had the heart attack a couple of months after joining Charlie Weis at Notre Dame. Weis had just been hired and Cutcliffe was going to be his assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. He resigned after having the heart attack and moved back to Knoxville. Then was brought back as OC by Fulmer after the 2005 disaster.

Ok, now do Andy Kelly, Shuler, Tee Martin, Daniel Jones
Don’t forget about what he did at Duke with Thaddeus Lewis and Sean Renfree. Lewis was nothing before Cutcliffe arrived in 2008, and he ended up a two-time All-ACC quarterback. Renfree was a throw away recruit who was a multi-year starter and spent 3-4 years in the NFL.

Agree Hamilton screwed up the Kiffin contract like he screwed up everything he did as AD. My comment was not antiKiffin as you seemed to interpret it. Turns out, as clarified by some other posters on the previous page, my hindsight bias as you call it was a bit off. Cut was head coach at Duke when Fulmer was fired and was not in the mix for the job but he was after Kiffin left but wanted to bring his entire staff with him from Duke, and the wisdom of Hamilton, he said no and decided Dooles was the man. There are not enough words to describe Hamilton's incompetence at hiring coaches.

Absolutely. I mentioned Daniel Jones but failed to mention the others. I’m not sure why someone chose to play him against Heupel in the first place but Cut has a long, long history of developing quarterbacks

Fulmer's teams won 6-7 games a year on average sans Coach Cut. With Cut as OC, we won championships.
If you aren't willing to give David Cutcliffe his due then you weren't paying attention during those years.
