I have wrote the title of this thread in many threads and blogs when the VOLS are involved in a coaching search and even up to our most recent coaching search for basket ball. I am really hoping to be wrong this time because we cannot afford to miss again. We are even worse than being at the “crossroads”. While every one is always throwing out the big names, I always say UT's M.O. is the "who the hell is Jerry Green", type hires. First thing fans have to do after the hire is go to Google to find information about our new coach because they have either never heard of him or know just enough to spell his name. In the most recent search, remember the names being thrown out before signed Coach Martin; Shaka Smart, Brad Stevens, Mark Turgeon, Buzz Williams and Anthony Grant to name a few and they were more, much more. Now Cuonzo ended up being the safe, ok hire, he wasn't the splash everyone thought we were getting. I like Cuonzo and I am not bashing him that is not my point. He is doing a good job with the basketball team.
Now we are looking for a football coach, again. I know we all remember the names thrown out there the last two times? It is Very similar to the names on the short list this time. I know the circumstances are different then but all the names that we are now hearing we were in on and we didn’t pull the trigger on is troubling to me. UT has a history of settling not getting “The Guy.” Even though I am hearing Gruden is on the table, why do I feel like UT will not pull the trigger and not with just Gruden with any of these "Big name" coaches. So UT being UT, I can't help to feel the next UT coach will be along the lines of the criteria we all want, worked his way up, this is his dream job, won championships on different levels, but I’m afraid the guy we choose is all that but not a big name like we are ere expecting.
I am hearing rumblings of this guy and yes I had to Google his information and his back ground. Could he be Brian Kelly 2.0, maybe? He replaced Kelly at central Michigan and then replaced him at Cincinnati. Can you guess his name? Head coach of Cincinnati Butch Jones. If History repeats itself, this or someone of this ilk will be our next football coach; Which means, we will miss out again, on a hire that could have escalated our football program to the elite level it is and for once in recent history we could have landed the "big fish" in the league. The money UT has spent on buyout is mind boggling and it was unmemorable money spent. I hope UT, does the right things for once spend the money up front not on the back end with buyouts and land the “big Fish." Let’s Get It right, GO VOLS!! Peace and Happy thanks giving.

If we are going to get back on top of the SEC we better make a great hire. We have to catch up with Alabama,Florida,LSU,Georgia,S Carolina, and now Vandy. They are not going to come back to us. We have to get alot better.

You have to spend money to make money

With that said football makes the most money you have to get a Coach who will WIN and fill the stands ...
It will bring money back in the long run

I can't help but agree. The last 2 good coaches were UT alums. The last big splash coach we landed was General Neyland. Further, Cheek, another non-alumni would rather the football team fail bc somehow, he thinks, that will improve academics.

Just because something has been done a certain way a few times does not mean it will be done that way from now on. Sometimes changing times affect things and sometimes people learn from history. We shall see.

I'm now afraid with the financial difficulties that we have at UT, that we are going to have to accept the fact that we are going to be down for some time to come. It will take several years to catch up to the Top SEC schools even with a big name coach, which I'm not convinced that we can afford. UT traditionally has not steped up to paying the hugh amounts demanded by the heralded winning coaches....time will tell, but I'm not expecting anything to change...I hope it does, but we all may just have to get used to where we are for the near future.
I's hard to swallow but life just sucks sometimes.

I don't feels its an issue of money, as much as we have an identy complex and we want it on the cheap. This guy Butch Jones keeps popping up today from different circles. It will be a huge let down not saying it couldn't work just a huge let down. He has won at every level. Wiki him.

Johnny Majors was a big splash hire in 1976. Just came off a National Championship at Pitt.
Watch out what you say about Cheek and Hart.. I got ripped for saying they don't understand the importance of UT Football and am afraid they will not make the right hire.

Fans at the Carousel demand a Butch coach

You jest but I and a lot of other straight ppl including at least one very straight legend of the game went there in college just to see a drag show and it wouldn't surprise me in the least. Muscular guys in tight pants are going to appeal to gay men and women and no one likes a loser.

When Majors came home to be TN's coach he was to be the savior of all TN football. It was slow going for him to get things turned around. It started clicking good finally in the 80's. What I'm saying is, whoever Hart hires to be TN's coach, it will take time for things to turn around this ship....maybe 3-5 yrs. who knows? We will have to get 3-4 good recruiting classes to be able to even compete with the likes of Florida, Alabama, SC, & Georgia. Heck, we lost to Missouri this year for crying out loud + Vandy. We as Vol fans need to find patience & not whine & cry about the long slow process that's about to come with a new coach.

I agree we need patience but also during rebuilding programs you have to beat a couple teams you're not suppose to ala Majors upset of Notre Same in 79. Dooley would still be here if he would have beat almost anybody in the SEC this year. That being said this fan base is beaten down and needs a shot in the arm to have faith in AD and resurrection of our program.

I'm not so sure it will take that long. The problems on Defense are fundamentals. Angles, tackling and containing. Any coach worth his salt can fix those problems quickly.

National title contenders? yeah that will take any coach some time but competitive can be done quickly.

I know what i wrote is little long but it seems i am closer than most. Several are saying Gruden has reduced his demands twice yet Adim/boosters are not sure they want him now due to the power he will have immidiatly. So is that been the problem whole time boosters want a yes man coach? They are surly not going to screw this up.

The difference is that we now have the $$$. The University decided to let the football program off the hook for 3 years so that we could buy a big name. Our priority is finding the coach. There's nothing I've seen that makes me think we're settling. The AD has no choice but to swing for the fence because there's nothing else he can do. This is it. This hire defines the next decade for the Vols.

Don't worry. We will come up with the money. Money is the least of my worries within the administration.
