Western Kentucky game--
Was it just me or was the lack of pressure on the QB and push by the D-line was horrific.

Your thoughts Volnation
Not good- don't even know what to say about our QB arm strength and accuracy.

We got to the QB alot this game. If it wasn't for that 50 yard run that running back wouldn't be anywhere close to 100.

Bottom line is our dl just isn't very good. It's going to be ugly against real competition. The dt recruiting misses over the years are showing up.

I agree that we aren't getting to the passer as often as I would like. But I did see an improvement from last week. And we need to remember that our two best pass rushers are injured. So I think this is blessing by getting others reps til jac and vereen come back. Remember we didn't even play curt today. So hopefully he's a full go for Oregon. We will need his pass rush and speed. Big Dan still needs to be more consistent.

Baring something unforeseen, our top 2 pass rushers will play next week. That being said, I still don't see us beating Oregon, but we should be able to keep the game respectable.

People are really focusing on the negatives here. If you don't see how much improved this defense is from last year, you know nothing about football.

I don't think ANYONE is or would ever compare this defense to the worst defense in UT FOOTBALL HISTORY!

I really thought Big Mac would have a bigger game....at least one sack and collapsing the pocket up front. He was single blocked a lot and didn't blow his man off the ball like you'd expect a man of his size to do.

We won. Who cares? Fix what we messed up, and come back at them next week.

We finally have real coaches and I expect us to improve each week.

Will also help to get J. Smith, C. Vereen and C. Maggitt back healthy.

Go Vols!!!

The dline looked pretty good all day, the LBs looked lost at times and the secondary had a good game. I wouldn't say we have a top 25 d but we should be considerably better than last season. WKU struggled to run the ball at times and their vaunted RB was a non-entity for just about the whole game. I have concerns in pass coverage but the second half adjustments give me hope that the d is on the right track. We are in good hands people, don't expect Rome to get built this year.

OP - you might want to refrain from posting threads like this. Fail.

The design of the D was to keep the ball in front of each area of defense. They had one run breakdown when the LB got lost and stuck behind a d-lineman. The pressure without blitzing was very good. WKU used a great deal of play action that was effective in delaying the rush because they were effective running the ball. They were effective running the ball because our D rarely had more that 6 guys in the box to prevent the big play or a deep pass. Notice that WKU did not complete any deep passes. Reason - design of the D.

Plenty enough pressure.
WK's strategy was to wear them out early by turning the ball over. Kept them on the field 20 minutes.
A little gassed.
I'll take the win.

How many of these negavols were the same ones saying we would lose to WKU?

That's the real Stat.

I noticed as the game progressed he would just stand straight up and then engage the O'lineman. Definitely wasn't blowing anyone off the line. I would have thought with his weight loss and increased conditioning he would be disruptive on a more consistent basis. As of right now he shows up for a play here and there but not what you would want.

What game were you watching? The d-line was hurrying their QB practically every play.

Mccullers just doesn't seem to have the motor to dominate.....he certainally hasn't been impressive thus far

This was a solid win where coaching and practice were difference makers. Our defense created turnovers by jumpin routes and stripping the football out. Those are both things that are practiced and weren't just luck.
This team is playing like they have been well coached. Butch and company have to work with the talent they were given. So far that talent is playing pretty much mistake free football. Not getting out coached is a big win for us, which was the only way we were going to lose this game; which is what I said earlier in the week.
Great game Vols, on both the part of the players and the coaches! Relax and enjoy the win Volnation.
