D4H's 2018 Tennessee Vols Season Preview

The whole world will know soon enough how bad Butch Jones was.

The NFL success of former Vols will be one part of the puzzle thay exposes Butch Jones incompetance. The other part will be Pruitt's immediate success.

In the end I will be proven right.
Yep there was just so much talent on the field Saturday

I just love how predictions within the prediction are wrong.

Tennessee’s total margin of defeat in the 3 losses predicted is 10 points.

It's a comprehensive body of work that reads sort of like a Tom Clancy novel - while it is peppered with names of real people and places, it is a work of utter fiction. The only difference is that Clancy's work was entertaining.

I think Trey Smith will stay all 4 years. He's gonna be an interior offensive lineman in the NFL and those guys typically don't leave after 3 years. Also I'm hopefully we can land Wanya Morris and Darnell Wright in this recruiting class. That means we should have at least 3 five stars on the offensive line in 2020. Two of them being sophomores and one being a senior.
Looks like you were right about James Conner. Nice work!

He’s crazy if he stays 4 years, he has #1 draft pick talent. Barring injuries, he will the anchor on an NFL O-Line for years
It's so funny how he's got crazed optimism on one hand (e.g., we should have won titles in 2015 and 2016, we'll a title in 2020) yet he makes other predictions that are too pessimistic (e.g., Trey Smith will stay all 4 years, won't be a tackle in the NFL, etc.).

If Trey Smith is in college in 2020, it's because he suffers an injury and plays sparingly or not at all in 2019.

Its the moment you've all been waiting for. My predictions for the 2018 season. I know I haven't been posting here as often as the last couple of years. The reason is very simple. There just aren't as many future NFL stars in college this year as the past couple of years. The next 2 drafts are gonna be kinda weak which is why I haven't been as heavily invested in following the college game this season as I have the last few years. With that said, I have been following it enough to put out my yearly predictions.

Let's start with my outlook for the Vols in the 2018 season. I still like the talent on this team. We definitely don't have as much NFL talent as we did in 2015 and 2016 (when we should have won back to back national titles). However, there is still enough NFL talent on this team (especially on defense) for a good coach to have instant success. Jeremy Pruitt has walked into a great situation. I believe he can have a Guz Malzahn-esque 2013 Auburn turnaround at Tennessee this year. We've had the talent for a while now, all we needed was a competent coaching staff. I believe we have that now. Tennessee will go from win-less in the conference to the SEC Championship Game in 2018. Just watch.

2018 Vols Season
September 1: vs West Virginia (W 31-24) - we start the season off with a bang shocking the nation with an upset win over heavily favored West Virginia
September 8: vs East Tennessee St. (W 59-0) - no explanation needed; this is a cupcake and we should destroy them easily
September 15: vs UTEP (W 42-10) - another cupcake; another easy win
September 22: vs Florida (W 21-14) - our first big test; defense dominates and the offense makes enough plays to beat the Gators
September 29: @ Georgia (L 27-28) - even with our early season success we're still huge underdogs in this game; nonetheless we play well but lose in a heart-breaker
October 13: @ Auburn (L 10-15) - same story as the Georgia game; we play incredible on the road as huge underdogs but Auburn squeaks out the win
October 20: vs Alabama (W 17-16) - we shock the world and beat the previously undefeated Alabama for a program defining win
October 27: @ South Carolina (W 35-14) - brimming with confidence from of our win against Alabama we throttle an overrated South Carolina team on the road
November 3: vs Charlotte (W 45-0) - the good times keep rolling as we get the shut out
November 10: vs Kentucky (W 31-10) - defense dominates and the running backs run wild against Kentucky
November 17: vs Missouri (W 30-21) - team loses focus a little after a string of dominating wins and lets this one be closer than it should
November 24: @ Vanderbilt (W 52-13) - revenge game so the team is focused and lays a beating on the Commodores

Final Regular Season Record: 10-2 (6-2 SEC) - even with losing 2 conference games as well as the tie-breaker to Georgia, we find a way to backdoor our way into the SEC Championship Game after Georgia ends up losing 3 conference games (at LSU, vs Auburn, and in a crazy upset vs Vanderbilt). That sets us up for an epic rematch in Atlanta against Alabama.

2018 SEC Championship Game: vs Alabama (L 28-32) - we put up a hell of a fight but Nick Saban and the Tide outlast us in an instant classic

2019 Sugar Bowl: vs Miami (W 38-20) - its 1985 all over again as the Vols are back in the Sugar Bowl against "the U"; same result as last time; we win BIG

For the 3rd straight year.....this is aging well.

I have let my heart guide my outlook for this team in the preseason lil too much the last few years. We are definitely a year away from being SEC title contenders.

With that said, this is reminding me of Kirby's first year at Georgia. Remember when they got blown out by Ole Miss before playing us? They ended up playing us close with us needing magic from Dobbs late to win the game. Well I think the same thing happens next week.

We'll play Georgia close and the game will come down to the wire. I haven't lost faith in this team.

What year would that be, 2023?

I’m still amazed by people who say this and other things like “Georgia will chose the score”. Lol. Does anyone actually watch college football? Anything can happen, especially when it’s a rivalry.

The "anything can happen" that generally happens to Tennessee is that the QB gets sacked and fumbles the ball right into the hands of a falling defender OR the receiver fumbles the ball through the back of the endzone eliminating a sure touchdown.

This team will lose by 50 to UGA. Hell Florida could have beaten us by 50 if they were an actual good football team.

The whole "any given Saturday" argument is predicated on a team having the capacity to pull off an upset.

I haven't seen anything from these players or the coaching staff that says upsetting Georgia is even in the realm of being a possibility. We've only looked competent against non-P5 opponents, and even against those we came out in the first quarter, not ready to play.

Does it still remind you of that?
