Dabo taking scholarships away from former walk-ons.

Football never made sense because they didn’t actually miss a season. Baseball? Yes, their season was pulled 3-4 weeks in. Basketball? Maybe, since they didn’t get to finish. But football started and got “fully” played in 2020. No reason to extend those athletes.
Actually basketball players who were seniors in 2019-2020 and lost out on the postseason because it was canceled weren’t granted an extra year of eligibility.

You're trying to hard to dislike the guy. They're not the only program that does that to walk-ons.
Yeah, they committed to Clemson without knowing they’d ever be on scholarship and then ended up getting part of their college paid for. the horror

I feel it was a well thought out decision…especially considering the timeline. Until the SEC flexed it’s muscle, the FBS season was in high doubt and many FCS seasons were truncated or outright cancelled…as was JUCO. Remember Trey Lance and NDSU played two games in 2020. This all doesn’t factor in the multiple games players lost for testing positive and the matchups cancelled at the last second for multiple positive tests. Nothing got “fully played” and it shouldn’t have counted against eligibilities.

I’d really like a database that vetts that theory. Is Dayne Davis still on scholarship? Keep hearing Hubbs huffing that they give and yank scholarships like a truck stop. Never bought it.

I think its going to be some of both. If the coaches have spare laying around at the end of the off season they can give it to a walk on. They probably start with either the most needy or the ones closest to contributing in a game, or actually contributing. after that it becomes a value engineering exercise. Is that walkon worth the continued scholarship? Dayne Davis probably kept his if I had to guess, but some other other walkons may have lost theirs or seen them "given" to another walkon who passed them.

I don't see either case, keeping or losing the scholarship, as an issue. and I don't see why it should be an either-or case.

You just don’t see the joyous celebration videos of Bama and UGA walk-ons getting scholarships. Honestly don’t believe Saban and Smart issue them. Every scholarship is spoken for and they’re happy to lose transfers so they can load on the next 4 or 5 star. Why would a mother be crying because they got a FREE SEMESTER? When Heupel said “you’re on full scholarship!”, I don’t think they cut off the “while supplies last.” part.

Leagues like the B1G and PAC-12 choosing to play their schedule the way they did and initially taking a “moral” stance against playing is on them. Bama managed to get 13 games in that year, Clemson would’ve as well had they made the NCCG. 12 is all any athlete is guaranteed in a CFB season and the majority of the two P5 conferences in the South accomplished that. No reason for the other conferences to not have been able to do the same thing.

I think it is mostly anecdotes that make me think that. IIRC, there was a year under Jones when they were a few players short of 85 and gave some guys a one year scholarship. I imagine it is different if they know up front though.

No reason cept no two circumstances are identical when different humans are involved in the decisions. Some college careers were minimally affected by cancellations…others drastically. The decision to remove all that against eligibilities made everything a fair clean slate. All washes out after 25.

hey you give me something easily worth 10k and I may cry.

who was Smart's QB, and that kicker with the glasses?

I don't think anyone is arguing that its a thing teams should have to do. As I said it something coaches can use if they have open slots, if you don't have openings, the walk-on stays a walk on.

Guess that’s where we’re at.

I’m sure they can get some sympathy from the baseball players that are all on partial scholarships or walkons.

Everyone understands scholarships are 1 yrs deals. I’m sure walkons understand their’s could be temporary
Exactly...and they also have the luxury of using the portal. Now that the NIL and portal are realities, it's a new day and different rules for all parties involved. Not saying it's right or just, but that's the way things are now.
