DAN CAMPBELL: "It's going to be a long time before Hooker competes for starting job."

Dan Campbell has issues on his hands. Evidently Jared Goff is stinking it up in practice. Coach previously said Hooker will sit his rookie year, and I hope he is afforded that luxury. Either way, things could line up for Hooker to take the reigns of the Lions in the future. Good luck to him!

Interesting to see this. Rumor is strong in Motor City - I hear that they are likely to sign Teddy Bridgewater and release Sudfield. I think they probably should with so much promise around the team this year. I hope they don't sign TB to anything more than a 1 year deal with an option for 2nd.

Coach speak. You have to build up the #1 until he isn’t the #1 anymore. And right now, there is no threat to Goff being the #1 given HH’s injury.

As soon as HH is physically able to compete, though, everything he does will be evaluated to determine if he can ultimately be their new #1. Goff has his limitations and they have been obvious back to his days with the Rams.

Yes, and HH hasn't played a down in the NFL

Saw today where they signed Teddy Bridgewater to back up Goff. They also said that Sudfeld could eventually play as well. It seems they're committed to not playing Hooker early and letting him recover, which is the best thing for him. Teddy is a great mentor and understands what it is to have an ACL injury and come back from it. They're really taking care of Hooker. I'd say that in 2 years, it may be Hendon's to lose.

I think what they are doing with HH is absolutely great. He is going to be given all the time he needs to heal. HH will have time to learn the playbook and understand the offense without any pressure to produce. I hate it when I see a rookie QB get thrown to the wolves in his first year and it ruins a career. The Lions will be taking the opposite approach here and I hope it sets HH up for a hall of fame worthy run.

Dan Campbell: 'It's Going To Be A Long Time' Before Hendon Hooker Competes For Lions Starting QB Job
It's crazy how they twist narratives with headlines.. this is basically a 'nothing to see here' moment. He's coming off of an ACL tear and even if he wasn't he wouldn't be competing with Goff in year 1. He will sit get healthy and unless Goff implodes sometime this year or next he sits and develops. Goff is signed through 2024 for 25-26 mil the lions are gonna get everything out of him they can and develop Hooker. Hooker is signed through 2026 for 1.5mil a year. He is in no danger of getting cut and the worst thing the could happen to the Lions is him starting this year or next financially. The NFL is a business and Hooker is a long term investment (a good one at that).

27 actually. Goff is currently 28 and hooker 25. By the time hookers rookie contract is over in 2026 he will be 29 which is peak age for a QB. Peyton won his first super bowl at 30, Favre 27, Kurt Warner was 28. QB's play well into their late 30's productively these days. Hooker will do so with less mileage on him than most. If he gets it he will have a long career.

I don’t know the definitive answer, however, Roger Staubach was 26 due to service in Vietnam.

EDIT: Sam Mills 27
To my mind, USFL (the first one) was pro football - that should count for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Apparently the Hockey Hall of Fame considers any professional hockey:

Gordie Howe played a full season for the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80, so probably past his 52nd birthday.
Then one game for the Detroit Vipers (minor league) in 1997-98 -- at age 69 or 70, probably 70.

Then again, Buck O'Neil played in a minor league baseball game at age 94.

I agree with everything you say. But, I believe next year HH will be given the opportunity to start and either lose it or run with it.
