Dan Patrick leaving ESPN

Patrick obviously has too much dignity to remain at the network that bought us "Who's Next?" and "Stump The Schwab."

personally, I love how Patrick explained why he was leaving. He said he didnt' want to take the job for granted. Is this another way of saying something wasn't right? :)

It's only lately that I've grown to dislike DP. I agree that he used to be one of the best on the network. Lately, not so much.
I agree....I think he's got an ego thing goin on messin with his performance. His radio broadcasts I hear him do while driving to work are so painful I'd rather listen to Phil Collins not care anymore.

Exactly. I immediately became 100 times more smug than usual after listening to Dan.

Everytime I have listened to the DP show I have had the feeling boredom was creeping in for Dan. He is chasing dollars somewhere, but I doubt it has anything to do with sports. Otherwise this would have been a messy divorce.

My thoughts exactly. After seeing the way ESPN treated a guy like Keith Olberman who they escorted out of the building when he left them to go to Fox, I'd say DP is leaving the sports arena and going the Craig Kilborn route.

How did that work out for Craig?

Depends on how you define success I guess. He's into acting now I think, but he had about a 10 year run as a talk show host on the "Daily Show" and the "Late Late Show" following Letterman. That's not too shabby.

I don't know. NFL Network and NFL on NBC could both be smart fits for Patrick...

1986 - 1988: Play-by-play commentator for the Savannah, Georgia, Spirits of the Continental Basketball Association.
1990 - 1993: Sports Director at KCBA television in the Salinas/Monterey/Santa Cruz market of California.
1993 - 1996: Anchor of SportsCenter for ESPN
1996 - 1998: Host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central
1999 - 2004: Host of The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn

7 years five of which were on a show no one watched. He has been in about 4 movies since 2004. Other than that what has Kilborn done?

I hope Patrick finds better success

I'm not trying to defend Craig Kilborn as some sort of media superatar. Just pointing out that he's done some different things since leaving ESPN just like Keith Olberman and several others.

I think that Olberman (despite being on MSNBC) has done ok for himself. I was just saying I hope Patrick does better than Kilborn.

Departure from ESPN/ABC/ESPN Radio
On July 9,2007, Patrick on his radio show announced his departure from ESPN/ABC effective August 17, 2007, stating, "I am leaving ESPN August 17th to go out on my own and be a free agent." "I think I was starting to take it (ESPN) for granted," Patrick says. He says ESPN tried to talk him out of it. If there were any animosity, he says, "I wouldn't be sticking around until August."
ESPN's statement released to the media said that Patrick would be released from his contract August 31, 2007 exactly 1 year early from his deal that was to run until August 31, 2008. The statement also said this would be the final comment on Patrick's situation from ESPN. "ESPN contractually bans all employees from making specific announcements of their futures on their airways, but out of respect to Dan and all he's done for ESPN we allowed him an opportunity to end the speculation".

[edit] Reaction to Patrick's Departure

Reaction from media sources hit the world wide web by storm. Many webpages, blogs, news media outlets, and even here at Wikipedia have speculated on the reasons for Patrick's departure and possible future. On July 10, 2007's The Dan Patrick Show, Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick himself put some of the rumors and comments to rest.
  • Patrick stated that he is not leaving ESPN to run off and get married to former adult film star, Jenna Jameson. Stating that, "the people who post that should go ask her boyfriend, ex-Ultimate Fighting Champion Tito Ortiz if that rumor is true."
  • Patrick made clear that he was not married to ESPN personality Linda Cohn.
  • Keith Olbermann stated that it was only a matter of time before a website claimed that he was fired from ESPN like they claim he (Keith Olbermann) was, even though Olbermann wasn't. Patrick again stated he was leaving on good terms with ESPN and that he could return to ESPN if he would so choose to do so.
  • Patrick said that he wants to be on both Television and Radio again that some newspapers were reporting he only wanted to do radio.
  • Patrick stated that he has not made any decision on what he will do in the future but hopes to start the process soon.

As far as I am concerned his appearance in "Old School" provides credibility that requires no defense.
