It took the NFL a while but they finally learned that lack of competition was killing the golden goose. They implemented a salary cap and adjusted scheduling to level the field.
I don't know what college football can do but when a team goes 10-2 and has nothing to look forward to but a mid level bowl game in front of a few thousand cold spectators it kills the spirit for the game for players and fans.
