Don't even have to call in the Beer barrel. I mean we all know what it is but just call it the Battle of the Barrel.

I feel you, but I reject that “Red River Rivalry” corporate advertising. I reject it all. The PC language nonsense can go right in the river with the goalposts. It is a barrel, and it contains beer - BIG ORANGE BEER!

I don’t see the issue. They can’t say that they don’t want the connection between the schools and drinking considering they sell booze at the games now.
Some Kentucky players were killed in an accident where the driver was drinking or drunk around 1998 or so. That’s when they got rid of it. I can understand the reasoning.

The tragedy didn't have anything to do with the barrel. It was just a "this is kinda a bad look" thing of Moral Majority 90s. Bring it back.
And the football player who was responsible for the 2 DUI fatalities in 1998 had previously shot a teammate also while drunk.

Maybe the issue was more with him than a wooden barrel that he never touched in his entire life as UT held it from 1985 to 2010.

Hmm.. I was a student in the 90s and there was no beer barrel.. Didn’t an accident happen way before that? I looked it up and it said 1998, but I swear I don’t remember it (seeing the barrel) ever. I do remember there was always a blood drive though Kentucky Game.. but if you had told me then that one day you would be able to buy beer in Neyland I would have said that you were crazy lol.. but no, the KY football player who died in drunk driving accident didn’t have anything to do with the barrel itself lol.. the timing of it all seems all wonky though

It was there in the late 90s.

I’d also like to see the Tennessee Walking Horse back in the pre game show. At least for Homecoming.
That tradition died to controversy, too.

Remember the 60 Minutes report (I think it was 60 Minutes) about the use of mustard oil and other caustic substances on the horses to force them to do that characteristic high, mincing step? About the time that scandal broke, we saw walking horses on the sidelines for the last time (at least, on a regular basis).

And yes, the cancellation of the Battle of the Barrel was absolutely related to the DUI deaths of Kentucky students (or two different accidents, maybe, two years in a row? hard to recall all the details). That was absolutely the rationale given by Kentucky for withdrawing from the tradition.

Look at that hair from 1986. It used to take ladies forever to get that hair ready. I'm sure the hair spray industry really misses that being the style.
They were beautiful. Still are. Now hair is all ironed straight and worn down over the face. Yuck!

Agreed, bring back the Beer Barrel! Bring it back, place the missing scores on it, and let it resume its role as the trophy for our rivalry.

Any argument the anti-barrelists had about an inappropriate trophy celebrating alcohol went out the window when (1) Kentucky started selling alcoholic drinks to their wealthy donors in box seats at Commonwealth, and (2) when Tennessee started selling alcoholic drinks in Neyland. Sidelining the barrel for one year after that tragic accident would have been fine, but to ban it forever? NO-SIR-EE. Let the beer (barrel) be free!
I wonder how many Kentucky fans and students don't drink? Most everyone I know from Kentucky can and will drink you under the table.

If we can improve its looks a bit that would be nice. I’m sure the folks that originally painted it tried their best but considering the art we’ve seen on the Rock I think we can do better.

Kroger Field sells alcohol but only in luxury suites but not stadium wide. I guess Kentucky thinks only the rich and influential are responsible enough to drink alcohol. Neyland sells alcohol. The moral ground for Kentucky is lost not to mention the hypocrisy of the policy that is in place. Bring the Barrel back🟧⬜🟦.

Razorback here, congratulations on a huge win. Knoxville is my favorite venue in the SEC. I do wonder that the barrel in question should be a whiskey barrel instead of beer?

Aren't most walking horses now trained without soring, and isn't it possible to spot those which are? If so it should be no issue to have only humanely trained horses perform before each home game.
