Danny White on the state of Tennessee Athletics

In my opinion, 1 definitely and 1 maybe.

Should have replaced CKJH last year as the coach of LadyVols BB. She has gotten an extension in his tenure and the women are just fundamentally not good and don’t tell me it’s just injuries. The basic basketball skills are lacking and tenacity is nonexistent on the ones that are on floor.
I'll give you that they've had a bad start this year, but you would have fired a coach last year that finished third in the SEC behind two Final Four teams, beat the eventual National Champion to make the SEC Tournament Championship and went to the Sweet 16?

Fair point, at the least i would not have extended her.

I would have seriously considered it though. I personally have not seen the growth in the personal and team fundamentals from her teams. I also have not see the game management and coaching during games.

I think she saved herself last year in the end but the full body of work was questionable. I don’t want to turn this into a Harper thread as there is already one for that going back years. I just think Ad White made a mistake and gave into the Pat tree legacy with the extension.

I wouldn’t have fired her but I wouldn’t have extended her for that. Pat only had one team that *didn’t* make the sweet 16. All she did was barely meet the minimum acceptable standard for the program. Even if this year’s team rallies to barely sneak into the tournament, that isn’t good enough. Holly never missed a tournament and was still fired. Just making the tournament isn’t sufficient at what is supposed to be the gold standard program. And if this team misses the tournament there is zero chance Kellie is brought back. No Lady Vol team has ever missed the NCAAT.

The extension she got was just a one-year rollover, it didn’t increase the buyout and it didn’t come with a raise beyond what her existing contract called for. It was the fairly standard one year extension that 95% of coaches in this country get.

If they “barely sneak in,” then you’ll be right. But last year’s team was also 4-5 at one point and ended up running through the SEC to be a 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Trying to project where a basketball team will finish based on the first month of the season is an exercise in futility.

I don’t recall last year’s team ever being 97th in the NET or having a loss as bad as MTSU. This team has a bigger hole to get out of

I was unaware that the tournament committee used the NET ranking the second week of December to determine who is in and out of the tournament in March. They were 86th after the loss to Gonzaga last year, FWIW. It’s not worth being mad about in December when all the matters is where they are in March. If they’re just as bad in March, then you won’t have to be mad, because they will get a new coach. Spending the season miserable because of what happened in the first month is wasted energy.

It amazes me that people accepted Dickey back as AD after his departure to Florida and the damage done to our program from that transition.

Some would take Kiffen back in a heartbeat.

DD got his tail caught in a crack with that Shaklee supplement he was selling/promoting and he wasn't that adept at hiring basketball coaches as I recall, but he didn't do the damage that Mike Hamilton and Dave Hart did.
