Darby

yeah, Bama's offensive line is OK, but not the dominat group we are used to seeing from them...we should be able to contain Darby.

they kind of have the same problem/solution we do...they have two really good receivers and have relied on the pass heavily. the big difference is the qb position...ours is better.

this game might be a little higher scoring than we think now that i think about it.

That is my key to the Bama game. If UT holds Darby under 100 and decides to play special teams it could be a big day for the Vols. From what I have seen, Bama's front seven is a shell of what it was last year. They will bring the kitchen sink on D all day, and put their corners on an island.

I think if Darby runs like he did last week, he can get 100 on UT easily.

I think the way UT shuts him down is by scoring early and often, get up by about 14 points, and they won't give the ball to Darby much. But our run defense isn't great, and if he gets 20 or more carries, he'll get 100 yards.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you will see the real J. Mayo return for this match up. If that is the case, Darby will have to earn his yardage. I think Mayo has been banged up for a while now. In fact, I expect that UT's defensive front will soon begin to show a little maturity. There are a few like Walter Fisher and Demonte Bolden that have two or three games under their belt now and have had time to adjust to the speed of the action.

Just read that Walter Fisher has bulked up to 282. Still undersized a bit, but he's getting bigger, and hopefully stronger. That should help out.

I did like this though:

"We're not by any stretch of the imagination where we have been in the past and where we want to be,'' defensive coordinator John Chavis said Tuesday.

But hear this:

"We're getting closer,'' Chavis also said Tuesday.

Has Bama's O-line improved any since last year? If not, I don't think he'll have a big day against us.

True, true, but if I remember correctly their QB couldnt pass worth a crap on you. That's key, we have to be able to do both.

I still don't know what to make of Darby and the Bama run game this year. It has not been that impressive (hitting 18 more ypg than the Vols) for a middle of the pack ranking of 53rd.

Darby had a big game against Ole Miss but they rank 98th in rush defense. He did show some of the power you saw last year from him though.

Ya Darby has been slow go this year, but in the last 3 games has started running pretty good at 6.8 ypc I believe. UT is far from a Ole Miss, but I have seen some of the old Darby lately.

Darby doesn't worry me as much as their passing game does. Wilson, Hall, and Brown are a more formidable passing/catching trio than Georgia put on the field. UT forced Georgia to abandon the run by putting up points, despite the return TDs for Georgia.

If Alabama gets the running AND passing game going, it'll be a shootout.

Darby is going to give us problems. Mark it down!

However, no matter how good he runs, he and his Bama cronies are not catching the Volunteer air attack. Not happening.

The key to Alabama's offense will simply be JPW's ability to stay healthy and makes key 3rd downs.

Kenneth Darby has gotten back on track. Getting back into the end zone is proving a little tougher.

The Alabama tailback is the only Division I-A runner with 100-plus carries who hasn't scored a touchdown this season. In fact, he's riding a 233-carry TD drought dating back to the third quarter of the Utah State game on Oct. 29, 2005.

"I'm not worried about that," he said. "I feel like I'm going to get in there and once I get in there, I'm going to get in there a lot."

If Darby has learned one thing this season, it's patience.

The nation's No. 4 active career runner has gained 277 yards in the past two games after failing to reach 100 in the first five. The slow start sparked plenty of questions and talk about replacing Darby with backup Jimmy Johns.

"All that is motivation," he said. "It lets you know who really likes you and who doesn't really like you. If you're a KD fan, be a KD fan whether I'm doing good or I'm doing bad. It kind of made me mad. I take that into every game I play now."

It worked for him after a slow start in the overtime win over Mississippi. He ran 19 times for 141 yards after halftime.

"He was almost just ticked off," fullback Tim Castille said. "On the sideline he just didn't look happy to me. He literally looked mad on the sideline. That last quarter, I think he just decided to take it out on the defense."

One reason Darby doesn't score many TDs is the Tide typically puts Castille in at tailback near the goal line.

Darby's resurgence has put him only 490 yards behind Shaun Alexander's school rushing mark of 3,565 yards and 345 behind No. 2 rusher Bobby Humphrey.
