Lane has looked just as good if not better than Hurd, IMO. Especially if you watch the USU game again. I don't mind Hurd starting because he is the future and they are both pretty equal but let's not start throwing our SR tailback under the bus because we have a new 5 star. Lane will be needed this season and you can see he is ready. They both just need some blocking.

I completely agree. I'm excited to see our O-Line develop over the course of this season.

Lane averaging 4 yards per carry Hurd 3.3 neither has done a lot yet. I hope they both have breakout games today. I think we need to run them from the I.

WHAT! Marlin Lane runs a 4.5 40. He is definitely not slow...he is hesitant because no matter how fast you are, it would be pointless to run straight into the back of an Orange jersey. He is waiting for the line to create the gap to shoot. Hurd and Scott are more agile and better at making people miss after they get through the line but they hesitate the same way Lane does.

I think with our agile RB's and strong receivers, we should use the sweep toss more often to give them some open space. Takes away from play action but I think it gives them some room to work.
These 2 highlighted sentences are what is wrong w/ our run scheme, imo. It's designed for the back to get the ball and wait and see where the whole develops. I'd much rather have a scheme like UGA where they do run a lot of toss sweeps and the back already has a head of steam when he gets the ball. Hurd and Lane are not the optimal style of back for our run scheme. Scott is more suited to our scheme than either of the other 2. Also, I think our scheme asks too much of our young , undersized OL.

I'd actually like to see Lane take the handoff and run straight at the hole, orange jersey there or not. Hell, maybe he'd give our guy the push he needed to move the DL out of the way.
What if there is no hole to hit?

Seeing how Marlin Lane is on vacation, I think Derrell Scott plays this year. I can't wait to see him in the game. I have a feeling he will end up being a UT great.

Marlin Lane has two yrs of 5.0 YPC and hes at 4.0 YPC right now. Jalen Hurd is 3.3 YPC. They just dont give him the ball.

In Hurd's defense, that leaves out the positive yards and TD he has from screens, as it doesn't include total yards from the line of scrimmage.

So far in the first two games:
Lane long carry is 18 yards, and has 4.0 yards/carry
Hurd long carry is 12 yards, and has a 3.3 yards/carry

I was at the O/W game and I thought Derrell looked really good and fast. I hope he's given a chance considering our O-line situation. If the linemen can't open holes like they need to, it seems someone with speed to bounce outside is logical.

I have given out a lot of likes in this thread today. I have been frustrated the last few years how Lane has not been given the ball more. He is always running hard and moving forward and the stats back it up. He is the best back today at this moment in time. Hurd has a higher ceiling and is only a freshman and at the same time in Lane's career, he was not anywhere close to the potential that Hurd has. So, this is not a knock on Hurd. But, Lane has earned it and has shown on the playing field that he deserves it. As long as Lane holds onto the ball and makes the blocks in the passing game, he should be getting most of the carries and playing time. However, we need more than just one or two backs to be successful. Hope they both as well as others start to ball out at the running back position.

Don't see him being a ut great... But I really don't crown that until they atleast start playing... He is definantly a good one though if not they would of redshirted him by now and would look toward next season with him.

Not sure who you watched but Derrell Scott wasn't playing in the O&W spring game.

They can redshirt him at anytime as long as he hasn't played.

Scott has good wiggle but Hurd is faster. Scott has good speed but isn't a burner.

Love to see Scott in some space... Like an end around... Jet sweep type thing. Young man is super fast and seems to see the field very well. From the little tape I've seen.

Either way... He'll play when coach says he's ready. I know that sounds obvious, but we want to set him up for success. I would think he will get some runs in this year... And if not, well other teams could get a strong dose of Hurd/ Scott for the next few years.

Lane looks hesitant because there is no hole most of the time. Hurd is running hard but it's at a brick wall of defenders most of the time. Got to fix that if we're going to run the ball the rest of the season with any effectiveness.

This is absolutely true. I was watching the play last week when Fortinette (sp?) Scored and struck the Heisman pose. They acted like he was awesome but the hole was so big that Dooley on crutches could have scored. Both lane and Hurd have had to work for every yard thus far. That's why we haven't seen either bust big runs, they never get going.
