Data on Gary Patterson's viability as a candidate for UT's head coaching position

I live in Texas and while I won't claim to have a bunch of super secret sources, I do know some people here who told me last year that the Gary Patterson/UT bridge was burned when Hammy snubbed him for Lame Kitten. That said, I think some of that big $$$ could rebuild that bridge. The question is, do you want to float $5 million or more on him when he seems to be getting pretty humbled in his Big 12 debut?

Personally, I believe that the latter point actually can work to our advantage. His "humbling" debut in the Big 12 is somewhat predictable. The results he achieved at TCU, as a member of the MWC, were obviously against competition that, week in and week out, were not on a par with what he is now experiencing in the Big 12. He will have to upgrade his existing talent level to achieve the same kind of results as a Big 12 member. And the 2013 recruiting class will be his first as a fledgling member of the new conference. Some have already pointed out the disadvantages he would have, recruiting directly against Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas State, etc., as a representative of a very small private university. We could make the argument that the luster on his star might very well begin to erode if he doesn't make a move now, while his exploits and track record are still fresh in the minds of prospective employers.

My question - Can he recruit in the SEC - at a place like TN with less in state talent than its rivals? Can he go down to Atlanta and get 5 star WRs and the next STUD QB to sign with TN? Don't see a recruiting track record here.

TCU alums believe Patterson's total compensation package is between $4 and $5 million, with bonuses and escalators. It would probably take in the $5M range to move him from a pretty comfortable spot. If it's all about the money, Arky could beat us in a bidding war. So he's probably not our guy.

Why are people so in love with Patterson?

He has not beaten anyone and is getting all this hype over stats against one of the easiest schedules I have seen EVER. He has lost to every big time program he has played except for Wisconsin and a win over Boise.

Seriously, why is he someone to get fired up about?

@DanWolken: Not exactly a full-throated denial RT @davidubben: Gary Patterson on Arkansas rumors: "I don't think there's anything to that."
