Not always. Also, I love how everyone is decrying Kiffin's lack of "loyalty" to UT. Ask Bob Huggins what kind of loyalty he got after passing on three NBA jobs and multiple great college jobs to stay at Cincinnati. Ask Larry Eustachy how loyal Iowa State was to him at the first sign of trouble. Ask Barry Switzer how much OU stood behind him. If people were honest and simply said, "I only yell about loyalty when it benefits the team whose color laundry I root for" I'd be fine with it. Instead, everyone gets sanctimonious and acts as if Kiffin pissed on the altar at the Sistine Chapel.
If he did his job well for a few years and left us better off, then I'd be fine with it. He left after a year right before signing day and had to make a rush hire.

Like Brian Kelly? I'm sure he would have passed on the Notre Dame job out of loyalty to UT.
I have no idea what he would have done. I don't know him, personally, but I don't think he would have left Tennessee. Leaving UT isn't the same as leaving UC. And just because he did it, doesn't mean everyone would have. There are plenty of good coaches who wouldn't have taken the USC job in Kiffin's position.

I had to laugh at some of the folks the other day saying we should have gotten Kelly instead last year and we wouldn't be in this position.

I don't expect loyalty. I expected him to make this place better. He didn't. In my mind, professionals at his level do that.

Loyalty is a crap measure of a coach, but there's no doubt in my mind that UT is ready to be loyal and would have been to Kiffin, though unwarranted.

He didn't owe us, in the least. He's just the guy I wouldn't hire again.
