None other than LWSVOL (who is very well connected) has said that the UT staff NEVER connected hardly at all with recruits back in the spring and summer of 2007. Some have speculated they rested on their laurels after a Top 5 class in 2/07 but whatever- they were behind the 8 ball from the get go.
It is also strong speculation that TT knew his days were numbered when the jealousy about his getting extra $$$ from meeting with UT fans, was snuffed out by Hamilton and Fulmer when this EASILY could have been made "legal" by funneling the money thru UTAD before getting to TT. Some well connected guys have said TT really slacked off in recruiting in the summer and then almost stopped all together after the Chavis- Trooper practice field spat in August.
And then the STRONG word I get is that recruiting STOPPED dead in its tracks in October after the AL blowout loss since ONE more loss (the USC game being prime example) would have meant the ENTIRE staff would be out of a job. So they went all out to keep their job and recruiting was at that point a goner for 2/08.
Now, ALL of this happened BEFORE the 4 assistant coaches left but it didn't help ANYTHING that Fulmer took a full 6 frickin WEEKS to fill out his staff and it was mid January before we were at full coaching strength. My theory is that again- a bowl game win was vitally important to Fulmer's career/contract and especially to fan reaction/feelings towards him. So recruiting was DEAD in December also as the attention was a meaningless bowl game and getting new coaches.
It was the Philapotamous Perfect Storm!
