Why or why not?

Tom Cotton is offering some pretty racist and dumb reasons for the no side right now.

Nah.. we don’t need to add another failing liberal state ran by liberals for generations on the East coast , we have plenty of those already .

But that's not a good reason against representation is it?

I believe it is . But that’s just my opinion . Hey, I wonder if anyone has told all these woke kids that don’t have a clue about history , why DC is named District of Columbia ? They will lose their minds . 😂

I am ok with it if we allow other states to split such as California, Colorado, Illinois...etc. These states have large cities which pretty much do not represent the views and values of the rest of the state . They produce policies and taxes that only benefit the big cities. Taxation without representation.

It will never happen as that would destroy the built in lead Democrats enjoy in the electoral college.

It was never supposed to be it's own thing. It was one of many sorta symbolic/sorta real things our FF did. It's supposed to be a small area dedicated to the running of our federal government as to not show favoritism to any one state. I am pretty sure it is our only "district" meant to be for federal use only.

Phillip's v Payne 1875 has an interesting applicability. I didnt know about this before. But the SC court said that neither states nor the federal government had the desire to answer the question of statehood for a resident. That was about taxes. No idea if it could apply today. Not seeing other cases about its statehood

DC was never meant to be a state. That's by design. It's further evidence of the power meant to be held by individual states as it demonstrates why the FFs didn't keep Philadelphia or New York or one of several other cities as the nation's capital. They didn't want the appearance of favoritism. It's a district, and it should remain a district. It would make more sense to allow any permanent occupants of DC to apply to either Maryland or Virginia for citizenship, thus allowing them representation. Besides, I believe the existence of DC is provided for by the Constitution, meaning we'd need an amendment for it to become a state. There's no need for that to happen.

I think there's a better argument for making U.S. territories states, IMO.

If the residents care about it that much then cede the land back to Maryland like was previously done with the Virginia portion. The original district was shaped like a diamond before the Virginia portion rejoined that state.

Yup the Pentagon sits on old DC land.

If the left wants DC to be a state, they can try to have a Constitutional Convention. Otherwise, it’s a moot topic.
