Dear Holly

This is the thread to say whatever constructive ideas you'd write in a letter to Holly, only she's actually sitting beside you on your living room sofa. :) I'll get it started:

Dear Holly,
You know, I've noticed for years now that our offense usually kinda casually jogs from spot to spot with no obvious sense of urgency. Casually drifting allows the defense to easily adjust and maintain tight coverage, so, your players are not getting the open shots that the movements are SUPPOSED to be creating. It's frustrating to watch sometimes.

I sure wish that working on drilling QUICK and PRECISE movements EVERY TIME the Lady Vols have offensive possession would be a top priority before this coming season. I am 100 percent positive that opposing defenses will find it far more difficult to read what's happening if our players are moving so darn quickly and/or making precise full-stops when necessary for a screen or pick that it's confusing.

The key to getting open is to move in such a way that the defense can't adjust and someone is left open for a shot, right? Tennessee offense has simply GOT to pick up the pace in the half-court. NO MORE CASUAL DRIFTING/JOGGING FROM SPOT TO SPOT, PLEASE!!!

Love,
A lifelong fan

It would be nice if Holly is able to look at her weaknesses and the weaknesses of her teams and seek to make improvements. She needs to look at the successes of the top ten coaches and analysis why these coaches have successful programs and try to emulate what has made them successful. Vick Schaffer visited UCONN and took notes from Genno. He has really turned MSU around with less MCDonald Americans than has been at Holly’s disposal. As you remember many coaches visited Pat’s practices when we were at the top of the food chain. Holly simply cannot be hard headed and continue to do it her way, because right now what she is doing is not making the Lady Vols a consistent top 10 program. At rock bottom, being a consistent top ten program should be Holly’s goal.

It appears to me that Holly is using the same offense that Pat used during her last few seasons. It did not work that well with her either. I think the biggest problem in Holly's first couple of years was the limited ability of her assistants. Her recruiting has been very good and appears to look very good in the future. However, for her to win championships she and her staff need to move the ball faster and let the players soften up the middle by shooting from the outside rather than trying to force the ball inside every offensive play. You do not win very many games when you have 20 or more turnovers. On defense, it is difficult to stop down low scoring when you give away the baseline or allow unguarded 3s . I think an offense similar to UCon's or Norte Dame's would be much more effective than what is currently being run.

I have-not been to a practice in may years, but I think the players are afraid to shoot the 3 which has affected their confidence in shooting. The old "pat" attitude doesn't' seem to work very well during the last 8-10 years. An attitude adjustment may work wonders. I hope we get to see some of that in the next couple of years.

I know I have ramble a bit, but just trying to identify where some areas where Holly could put a better team on the floor.

Do stop recruiting slow-footed shooters who cannot dribble or create their own shots. Please get the Meighan Sharee Simmons kind of shooters

Isn't this the lady who has been an assistant to one of the most winning coaches in basketball history for 25 plus years...how much more help could you possibly ask for? If she doesn't know it now, she is not going to look elsewhere!

Are you reading this coach? Want to prove them wrong?

You got my number!

Getting those kind of shooters is one thing..... getting them to play within context of a team is then necessary after that....

I know people sing praises of Simmons..... but I saw a lot of "stop and pop" and part of the "Meighan plus 4" brand...

I wish Holly would seek help from her own staff... They cannot be destitute of hoops knowledge.... the good players are there.... we need coaching,,, at least at a minimal level

Losers blame Simmons for shooting too much and for not being a team player. Compared to our other 3-pointer shooters, Simmons can play point-guard and will defend.

Please do not make assumptions..... I know my basketball. I do not know if Holly liked the Meighan led offense.....

and I will not pretend to assume you are saying that either.... Perhaps you just are contending that it is better than what we have had since....

I didn't like the offensive scheme Meighan quarterbacked.... that is all i am saying

I understand what you are saying, however, he is a good basketball mind. It certainly helped Vick and MSU raise their level of play. Is he my favorite person, hell no but UCONN knows offense. If we could bring our team play to the level of the top five, with the players we are recruiting, we could kick some serious butt.

A lot of this article is good.... I do take exception though to Adams' contention that the alternative to Holly is a "big name" coach....

First of all we do not need a big name coach, just a coach who can coach.... Fla St S Florida Oregon State did not get "big name" coaches... they are doing just fine....

Every player has changed, 3 coaches have changed. Two constants remain...Is it going to be, change? or an addition, that will "gel" this thing?

Last year's start proved they started with a good plan...Uncertainty showed up and we never hit our confidence again....

The right words
and a loss is a lesson,
instead of a question mark.

Coach - It seems like you have confidence and/or hope beyond mine.... If we can't beat the South Carolinas and Miss St's, at the very least I expect to beat the Alabamas and the other ham n eggers.

We got more than enough talent, opportunity and reason, now we have to be able to convey it into consistent performance. Mentality should be the easiest fix of all. Skill, experience, talent...all that is there, just got to find the person in the mix who can reach them when they're unreachable.

We have beat the South Carolinas and Miss States, can’t say the same for Alabama!

Careful, For some reason if you don't agree with what a coach is doing and you share your thoughts you become subject to irrational blasts of stupid. I hope you have thick skin.
