The 50th anniversary is coming up next week. Ernie Grunfeld was a freshman and UT was a program that was elevating.

UT 11
Temple 6
For all the wrong reasons, this is one of the most memorable times in the history of UT sports for me. Thanks for the reminder. The lovely Vol Classic. As an aside, I still remember Danny Ainge playing for BYU in this event.

My mom took me to this game. We stayed for the entire thing - including the intra-squad scrimmage afterwards. The scrimmage wasn’t very entertaining, but at least they tried to do something for the fans in attendance.

About 8 years later I also witnessed the last second Gary Carter steal and 35 footer for the 1-point win versus American (also in the Volunteer Classic at Stokely).

That team had a great freshman class. Grunfeld, Mike Jackson, and David Moss.

Lenny Kosmalski’s (and John Snow and Wayne Tomlinson) senior year. Rodney Woods was a junior. That was a great roster. And Bill Seale was riding the unicycle since Roger Peltz had graduated a couple of years earlier.

Honestly, that was my favorite Vol roster of all time. And Mike Jackson was so underrated as a Vol. That dude was lethal from the corner.

I remember listening to this game on a transistor radio while visiting my Uncle Jack and Aunt Virgie in Huntsville, Alabama. Drexel Drive off Drake Avenue. This wasn't the same Volunteer Classic when we played St. Johns is it? Lou Carnesecca was their coach......

Snow could light it up at times. His 20 pt nights would have been 30 pt nights with a 3 pt line. I think it was his senior year when he hit 10 bombs and scored 20 points, with no free throws against LSU in a 20 pt win

No. Tennessee destroyed Ray Meyer’s DePaul team on Friday night. 96-61. That probably had something to do with Don Casey pulling that crap with his Temple team on Saturday.

Temple wasn’t in the 4 corners that night. It was mostly their two guards out top taking turns dribbling and then passing to the other. Their objective was to draw Mears out of his zone defense and CRM refused to acquiesce. Eventually UT started to turn up the pressure and chase their guards around. It was a really bizarre situation.

That’s the way I remember it.

Always loved Mike Jackson. David Moss story had an impact on me. So sad.

David Moss Day was another game that I attended as a kid. Around 1974 or 1975. He got a standing ovation when he walked out to center court using a walking cane.

His vertical was legendary. It was said that he could touch the top of the backboard.

So did both teams stall or just UT or just Temple? Was there a strategy? Was poor shooting involved or did they literally just take 12-15 shots the whole game?
