That seems to be fairly in line with things I've heard from some climatologists..that the Arctic ice is the primary concern, followed by the western (I think) Antarctic ice shelf...which is by far the smaller portion of Antarctic ice... It seems they feel that the larger Antarctic ice mass will be stable for a while...but I was never sure why. It sounds like it has a lot to do with the ocean circulation ... I guess Antarctica has an extra "air conditioner" that regions of the Arctic don't have....

You might find this interesting:

The full Wilkins 6,000 square mile ice shelf is just 0.39% of the current ice sheet (just 0.1% of the extent last September). Only a small portion of it between 1/100th-1/200th of Wilkins has separated so far, like an icicle falling off a snow and ice covered house. And this winter is coming on quickly. In fact the ice is returning so fast, it is running an amazing 60% ahead (4.0 vs 2.5 million square km extent) of last year when it set a new record. The ice extent is already approaching the second highest level for extent since the measurements began by satellite in 1979 and just a few days into the Southern Hemisphere winter and 6 months ahead of the peak. Wilkins like all the others that temporarily broke up will refreeze soon. We are very likely going to exceed last year’s record. Yet the world is left with the false impression Antarctica’s ice sheet is also starting to disappear.

Are people actually wasting their lives pondering this crap? How worthless.

I don't think it's worthless. We as humans have been pondering our place in the world and universe for ages. This is just an extension of that basic line of thought.

"Another interpretation (there are as many as there are new age whack jobs) and perhaps the most conceivable is that the date in question is the beginning of the Age of Aquarius"

Hot Damn! I'm ready for that! When do you think the girls will start burning their bras!

Is it just me or do you not find it funny that a culture that supposedly figured out something that is supposed to happen on a specific day in 2012 couldn't figure out to how to prevent the whole civilization from going kaput? It's like someone claiming to know when the sun is going to nova but gets hit by a truck the next day.

Yeah, I can't believe they couldn't figure out how to produce antibiotics and antivirals to protect themselves from diseases they had no way of knowing they would encounter.

I didn't feel like reading through the entire thread, but I've actually read up on this subject. There isn't anything that specifically says the world will end on 12/21/2012. A time period will end, but there is no mention at all of any apocalypse or anything of that nature.

Applying a little logic, one would think that something of that much importance would be mentioned quite a bit in Mayan texts and someone would have found something about it by now.

Overthinking it a bit. "How" they met their end is irrelevant. I was poking fun at the idea that anyone given credibility for any degree of prescience looks pretty foolish when they miss something, like, the end of their civilization.

I made great sport of a friend who paid for a psychic to blab about whatever they blab about. Less than a year later she was divorced and it was revealed her husband had been having an affair for some time. Funny how that never made it on the psychic reports.

Relax. I just think all that stuff is bunk.

Didn't read the thread, but the Mayan calendar has had an "end" before, and then they just kept it going.

Its not the end of the world. It is the end of a cycle based on the planets position in the galaxy. The Mayans specifically write about the events that happened at the end of these cycles. Dec 21, 2012 is the end of their longest calender known as the long count calender, and after a lot of research was proven to be extremely accurate to the rotation of our universe respective to the center of the galaxy. More accurate than current day measurements.

The long count calender has ended and began three times in its recordings. No one knows why they stopped records after the end of the third cycle, which is Dec. 21, 2012.

The Mayans have written that at the end of the third cycle, Dec 21, 2012 the world will suffer from a deluge or flooding. They have written that it will not be the end of mankind but it will be apocalyptic.

They were wiped out by disease. There really wasn't much they could have done about it.

There has been more than a few times.......... chalk it up to fear of the unknown.

Every generation thinks that their time is the end time.

Exactly. And how self centered is that?! To think our lifetimes are anything more than a microscopic spec of the Earth's existence, much less the universe! :zeitung_lesen:

Have you read ''Lost Star of Myth and Time"? Very interesting read.
