Deep breath...and here we go

Actually, I give most of the credit to Butch, who could be coaching at Colorado or Purdue right now. But he stuck it out, even through Hart and Cheek unsuccessfully chasing down Gruden/Strong, knowing he had a chance to coach here. To me, that was the most telling thing. He was willing to let the two birds in the hand fly away so that he could wait on the Big Orange bird in the bushes. Now he's here and doing one helluva job...so far.

So the credit is his and not so much anyone else in the administration.

Amen to this! He called it his dream job and he wants to be here. He told a recruit he wanted to retire at TN. I believe him. The man has passion along with his staff. We found a diamond in the rough, IMO.

Great post. As long as we don't call this recruiting class and upcoming season "year zero," I'm all in.Butch will wither create a buzz recruiting wise or he wont. He's getting paid MILLIONS so even though he may not have a top 10 class, no excuses for a bad class this year.

As an aside, this "wait and see" stuff is crap.... being on board when things are good, but not on board when things are bad. That's called being a BANDWAGON FAN, plain and simple. All may not be peachy on Rocky Top right now, but good gracious be a Vols fan or don't, just make up your damn mind.

Absolutely beautiful thread. Couldn't agree more with this. The sky is the limit and I am convinced that CBJ has plenty of surprises in store for NSD. We are getting the athletes we need to match up to the likes of Bubba, UGA, Florida, etc.... The swagger is being refueled once again on Rocky Top!! Team 117

We got lucky. I'm not sure if it's Arkansas fumbling the football for no reason lucky but it may be up there.

uuhhhh , you obviously didn't watch the game and have never heard of Billy Ratliff......isn't wasn't luck

In 2009, Alabama won the National Championship. There was definately an element of luck in that season for them. (1) Lincoln had his kick blocked and this secured Alabama's undefeated season. (2) Alabama was lucky that Colt McCoy was injured in the Championship game.

In order to win an NCAA Championship in football, you need (1) Hard work (2) a couple of REAL leaders on the team, (3) a deep bench (4) a good coaching staff (5) LUCK!!!

Beat me to it. I'm tired of hearing some UT fans try to cheapen that National Championship just to fit their agenda. Tennessee had the best team in the nation that year and they have the trophy to prove it.

Ratliff drove Burlsworth back causing him to step on the QB's foot. Then UT drove the ball down Arkansas' throat to score the winning TD. Not only that, the Vols were on a 25-3 run to end the game.

Agreed. However, even if it was luck, most national champions have had some luck along the way. Every one or two loss team has had luck b/c they wouldn't have had a chance to be in The Game without some help from other teams they had no control over, colorado got 5 downs, Nebraska had "the kick" vs mizzu, BC had Flute's hail marry, and think of the countless games whose outcomes were determined by the refs (especially before replay came into effect) and the list goes on and on.

There's also that old saying that champions CREATE their luck. It typically doesn't happen by accident.

I want us to have a coach who wants to be here in 15 years...not someone like a Petrino looking for the next big thing. I think Jones is our guy (as long as he wins)

For me it's two things:

1. Coach Jones WANTS to be here more than anywhere else - his DREAM job

2. Coach Jones has always kept the core of his staff together - if you look at Bowden in FSU's glory days - he always kept his staff together; same for Phil.

I think coach Jones is going to surprise a lot of people...

Everyone of us has had a moment in their life when they just thought it couldn't get any worse. Whether it was when you were a teenager, a job you hated, a job you lost, or a break up...maybe even a family death.

And while alot of these moments seems unbearable, and that things would never get better, the reality is they always did--and would.

I truly feel TN was at that moment up to a few months ago. It was rock bottom. Fans, players, and rivals all looked at the scenerio and considered it a wrap. "Those Vols had a nice ride but the SEC has changed and they will never be the same again," was the consenus of many people--including many on this site.

Then it went from bad to worse.

We fired the coach and many of us were on the Gruden ride. Yeah, wasn't that fun. Instead of being realistic we went with the Chucky dream and got so swept up in it that all other coaches were like drug-out meth hookers missing teeth. Then Gruden fell through. Then Strong fell through. Then we were back to the same feeling we hads during the coaching search for Dooley. The oh crap we are f%^^&&ed feeling.

But then something happened--

We got lucky. I'm not sure if it's Arkansas fumbling the football for no reason lucky but it may be up there.

We hired a real coach. A coach who clearly wants to be here. A coach that is turning the preception of this team around very quickly.

I say all of this not because North just committed (welcome home young man!) and not because Bell appears to be a commitment but because of this...

Rivals.com

Click on the page and go to recruiting. Every player popping up, Boyd, Gibson, etc, has an article and it includes us. We are hot again. We are getting in people's heads.

I personally don't know were we will end up because CBJ took over with very little time but the fact is he connects with players. He is bringing an energy we haven't felt since about 01...like anything is possible.

Please let that sink in...we have 5 stars actually placing us in their final two and are serious about it. Whe is the last time we felt we could actually go up against Bama with a recruit and win? Von Bell may just be that.

So the point is, it's deep breath time. We made it through one of the worst periods of TN football ever and we are now back in the game.

And NSD.......... we may shock the world!

Best post ive ever seen on here! Exactly my thoughts, but i couldve never said it that good! Lets sit back and enjoy the ride people!

Agree with everything you said. Just pointing out that the Arky game wasn't luck. The Syracuse game maybe but not Arky

Hoping your opinion is correct...but am reserving judgement until we actually see some results on the field over the next couple of years.

I'm sure we all felt/said the same things about Dooley when he 'salvaged' his first recruiting class as well and we managed to play in a bowl game his first year.

When we've managed to put a couple good classes together, have a couple of winning seasons and get out of the red financially...I'll believe things are actually starting to get better.

fair enough. Come back in a couple of years.

You have a sh*tty memory.

it's a new coach and a new beginning. there should be excitement.

i just sense that things are so bad, people want to treat each recruit, each press conference, etc, etc, etc.....into a sign that things are turning around immediately.

it's a long climb back out of hell and when you get out, it doesn't mean that everyone else won't be still waiting there.

We better get some very good defensive players this class if we ever expect to compete again...plain and simple!

Tell me you're not dumb enough to believe that wasn't luck. Ratliff knocked his guy back but a thousand times in a row, that ends up in a sack.

We got lucky. That's not a bad thing. But don't pretend that it was anything else.
