So as disappointing as the “nut kicks” we took today were we are still #20 on 247. I realize that puts us behind UGA, UF, SC, but it’s not an impossible situation right? Our Jr. and Sr. classes were top 10 and last year top 15 right? So, it’s not like we have a complete team of scrubs to work with if our coaches can coach up these guys right? Next year we should have a better class, but it’s not like we don’t have talent right? Move Byrd to corner, hopefully JJ comes back and balls out. Am I right or sunshine pumping too much?

Coaching has been non-existent for 5 yrs....longer even...

Forget about the star ratings of today...

Relax and watch CJP build a monster...it's coming...

No one is freaking out, but let's be honest....we lost ground today. The road back to contending is quite long and uphill. Folks can hang their hopes on better coaching, but it always comes down to the jimmys and joes. Our rivals got the better of us today.

Stop saying he has had limited time. He's had since the beginning of December. Dooley did better with less time under a worse situation. And to make matters worse, we will have a first year head coach, and 2 first year coordinators, and a depleted roster. It isn't going to end well.

I would hope that we can all learn a bit from our Basketball staff and squad... RB and staff evaluated and selected guys not on the super sexy list but good coaching with good players, probably better than their star rankings, can produce as we have seen. Superior athleticism and preferred size can be matched by intelligence and work ethic as a team. See Grant, Kyle, Admiral, Lamonte, when mixed with a few physically superior guys like Bone and Yves. So I am going to wait till they get here, practice and play a little before I write off a single guy this staff invited to wear Orange.... law of averages tells me some will whiff.. maybe a higher percentage than more star recognized guys, but I have found it better to use stars as probabilities of greatness rather than applying them as ceilings of production....

Take last nights game for example... KY vs UT...

If you kept up with articles on the players we were not expected to sign any of them. We were in their final group but that was about it. Coaches have been after them for 2 years so it is what it is. I'm just glad we hung on to JJ.

Now it's time for Pruitt and the staff to actually coach. Line play on each side of the ball needs to be the biggest emphasis. Followed closely by qb play.

No one should be freaking out too much and I'll tell ya why, recruiting ranks are great and all but they don't mean much if the coaching is crap

Rivals.com - Rivals' top 50 recruiting teams of the past five years

Our past five classes put us just behind Clemson in average rankings, and do you know the difference between is and Clemson?

Coaching, plain and simple, a good coach can take any player and beat you. I think this staff will show this, we might not set the world on fire next season but I'm going to be we'll see drastic improvements

So let's just chill and see what happens

Ughhh Dooley did not have no where near a worse situation.... Where have you been the past 5 months?????? 4-8, hired three coaches and let two go, well one according to good ole Jimmy hyams. If you weren't around we were pretty much the laughing stock of sports for a couple weeks in December, so no lane kiffin rollin out in the middle of the night was cupcakes compared to Pruitt's situation. Good god

CLemson is a bad example lol. Look at their avg star rankings and you will see the difference. Remember CLemson sign smaller classes.

But I agree coaching has been nowhere to be found and time will tell how good these coaches coach. GBFO

Here's the problem with that. Half of those recruits left due to butchys thin skin, over promises, and champions of life mantra. Maybe not half but alot, and most of those are starters and playmakers on their new teams..... So we need to quit on the averages of the last recruiting cycles.

You're missing the point, rankings and stars are cool and all but if the coaching sucks it won't matter how many five stars we sign if the coaches don't know how to use them properly.

While our ranking might be behind some of our rivals, I think we have the better all around staff and it will show at some point next season, and then the recruits will come

Deep breath mode seems right to me. Agree that the team has enough talent for the coaches to manage some real football this season. The first year staff might not light it up, but we should see better play, with several SEC wins. If this class is disappointing, it is because too many pieces seemed to be falling our way too easily, and that did not work out as we had hoped. A twenty ranked class is about as good as we should have expected. We can possibly finish with a top twenty team ranking, but that is also the high end of what should be expected. It requires a lot of work. I think we have the coaches and players for it, so I still feel better about the program than I have in a very long time. Bottom line is I am not disappointed in Coach Pruitt or this class. After what we've been through, I think we are where we need to be.

Dooley did not have a worse situation. Dooley walked into a dumpster fire.. Pruitt got Chernobyl.

The fact we got a top 20 class after what has happened over the past 4 months is amazing.

Our defensive recruiting class was pretty good!

I agree. The little time Pruitt has been here to end up with a top 20 recruiting class is pretty good. I will take what Pruitt has done to any of Butches classes. Simply because of coaching. You will see a big difference in this Tennessee football team. We have enough left over from Butches class to go with this years class to be pretty good. The fact we are even in for some big time recruits is a big turn around. We will be getting them soon. You will all see.

To counter your point you can't coach top talent guys if they leave your football and are coached by someone else. And I'm not at all trying to say botch was any kind of coach.

Edit: but you are right on the money with the good coaching part. I don't believe you can beat anybody with good coaching because you have to have to talent and ability but good coaching definitely gives you the opportunity. 👍

Put it this way - if we had begun National Signing Day ranked in the 60's and pulled a top 20 class, with the 4 stars in the class all (or mostly) conducting drama-filled signings while choosing our hat, we would be ecstatic.

Put it another way - if we finish anywhere near the top 20 in the rankings (or top 30 for that matter) next year we'll all be ecstatic.

So yeah, I think we should all settle down.

This exactly. We were like 50 something before Pruitt took over. Yeah we missed on quite a bit today but did everyone forget what he did in December on a weeks notice. We are currently sitting at 20 up 30 spots and this place is in meltdown mode. Ill reserve my meltdown for this time next year if we go 4-8 again and finish under thirty in recruiting. Yes today sucked but all in all Pruitt did a great job for really a little more than a months work. Gbo

Our defensive recruiting class was pretty good!

JuCo defensive class that signed in December was aight. JJ was a huge pull. But after JJ committed January 6, we struck out defensively down the stretch. We got some guys with some upside, sure, but it's not like we were competing against SEC schools for those kids. It's good to have a diamond in the rough that you snatch from Tulane, but it seems like our entire defensive class down the stretch was those guys. Mincey, Garland, Norwood, Flowers, Brandon Davis. All were backup plans, which is why they were given the green light to commit today.

We'll be fine. Coaching is more important than recruiting. But today stung.

Today did sting a bit but to be 20 is pretty good for a month. I'm hoping Pruitt can coach'em up.
