Defending 5A Smyrna Bulldogs to face Independence High for state championship title

The fact that Indy was spanked by Smyrna yesterday. I have seen both teams play and Indy is better. Thats what it has to do with it. Maryville struggled to pull away from a team with 33 players and Maryville has 5a enrollment right now. How do you know Maryville would have played better against Smyrna?

Do you think Maryville would have 60 straight wins in 5-a with 4 straigth titles?

Riverdale used to absolutely dominate 5a, and they didn't have near the talent that Maryville has year in and year out.

Riverdale would be the only team that could match Maryville's talent and tradition in 5A.

Maryville half-assed it. If you think there was any chance of Maplewood winning that game, you know nothing about football. Period.

I don't know if Maryville would have the same success, but 5A isn't obviously better than 4A, by no means.

I didn't say Maplewoods team yesterday had a chance to win, I don't think they did. I said if they had more than 33 players they could of had a shot. If you don't think a Maplewood team with 60 or so players could have beaten Maryville then you don't know anything about football.
When Maryville jumps to 5-a they will have to go through the likes of Oak Ridge, DB, Farragut, Ooltewah, W. Blount, and Bearden just to get to the semi's. Once they get there it will be Riverdale/Smyrna. That is a much tougher draw then Tennessee High.

Yeah they beat W. Blount every year but they're usually not that great but playing all those teams week in and week out will be very tough.
Also, if you knew anything about Region 6, you would know that this is the weakest it has been in seven years. Don't judge the Williamson Co. schools by what you saw in Indy last night.

Maryville is a great program and I have tons of respect for them. I believe they will continue to win titles in 5a but it won't be an every year thing like it has become in 4a.

What is the point of this hypothetical rant? Okay, I don't know football because I refuse to recognize this crap, sure.

When Ravenwood was crowned 5A champion a few years ago, it spoke volumes about the quality of play in 5A. Alcoa would have beaten Ravenwood. Their championship single handedly started a debate about how TN may only need 4 divisions for football.

I meant to go back and delete that, I just put it there because of what you said earlier. I believe Smyrna was better than Maryville. I even think that MBA was the best team in the state this year. I'm sorry but a team that has won 59 games in a row doesn't come out and play flat in the state championship, I believe you are not giving Maplewood enough credit.

Like I said, I respect Maryville and have actually been rooting for them the past six years or so. However, I was pulling for Maplewood last night. Once again, I believe Maryville will continue to win titles in 5a. I'm sorry if I've upset you.

Your basis on why Smryna would beat Maryville is weak; cause you saw Maplewood, have personally determined that Smyrna is much better than Maplewood, therefore they would beat Maryville, who "struggled" while winning by 2 TDs over Maplewood.

Here are some stats that will clear up who the better team is: 5, 60, 4.

Really? Are you on the board over at TSSAA, is this something that is still being debated?

4a football sure is so strong with teams like Henry Co making it to the semi's two years in a row. Henry Co. never even made the playoffs in the four years they played in Region 6-5a

What does Maryville's streak in 4a have to do with the outcome of a game between Smyrna and Maryville. I think Smyrna would win, so what, get over it. Thats also not the only reason I believe Smyrna would win. Gray is a better QB than Burnette and Smyrna has more playmakers than Maryville. The coaching staff goes to Maryville but Smyrna's is pretty good too. This is my opinion and I could care less if you agree with me as I'm sure feel the same way.

The only 5a team Maryville played was William Blount and they beat them by one point. WB was an above average 5a team at best. When Maryville starts playing 5a teams week in and week out, there won't be any 60 game streak going.
I'll agree to disagree with you.

TSSAA isn't debating going to 4 divisions, no. But now that a weak Williamson county team seems to get a yearly invitation to the Clinic Bowl, it shows how weak 5A is, at least the ones that play in the west bracket.

Ravenwood, Brentwood, and Germantown have won 3 of the last 7 titles.

Gray is better than Burnette, but Maryville has more playmakers, you're wrong there. The biggest difference is Smyrna's run game is much better. But it still wouldn't matter.

It is weak. Just because some team drops down and has success doesn't prove that Williamson County football is good.

Yes. The last time Smyrna played Maryville, at Maryville, we won!Put it this way, we have a player going to UT and a guy going to be drafted by the pros for pitching, and already has a Vanderbilt baseball scholarship.I heard Independence could be beaten by a lot of teams in Smyrna's region and I happen to agree.Case closed.

I'd like to see Maryville play every week for one year in Region 4-5A (Riverdale, Smyrna, Oakland, Siegel, Lebanon, Blackman, LaVergne, Wilson Central). I'm telling you guys that there was one team in that region (LaVergne) that could have beaten almost anybody I saw this weekend...........................and they didn't even make the PLAYOFFS!!!

Smyrna, Riverdale, and Oakland have all won titles in 5A in the last ten years. Wilson Central has become a tough out. Lebanon is a pretty good team annually and beat Smyrna, at Smyrna, (albeit on some questionable calls) this year. Murfreesboro Siegel had two D-I signees and couldn't make a dent. Blackman has the makings of a decent program.

I respect Quarles and he has a great system and good kids that produce. However, they would NOT run off anywhere near 60 wins in a row playing Smyrna's schedule.

I'll agree wellway and the truth is these teams are going to continue to beat up on each other Lincoln co would have finished last in this district and Ind. middle of the pack, and I think its safe to say that the days of Riverdale domination are over.
