Defense problems=talent, coaching or both?

They're a bust because they're not being coached properly. If Smart had this bunch, there's no way they play this poorly.

I think you meant to say Saban. Definitely not sold that Kirby has done much on his own. Satan is the brains, the head of the snake as it were.

It's coaching. And it's simple coaching. DBs are taught in middle school tO turn and look for the ball. Our guys don't do that.

If they had been taught since middle school they would remember. Or are you implying they are not being coached to do that here? A good corner would pick off a ball even if his coach said not to (which is absurd). Bad players make bad plays most of the time. Coaching can help a little. But a house cat can't be a lion. Not with all the coaching in the world. You need a lion to do a lion's work. We have house cats right now.

There can be little doubt Sunseri is an awful DC.

And the talent is still low, though we have, as pointed out above, at least 8-10 SEC caliber players.

You have to factor in to all the above, the effect of a complete change of defensive coaching staff and new scheme.

Under the best circumstances, with a good to great coach and top notch talent, that is going to cause issues.

Throw a bad coach into that situation with average to at best above average talent, and what you get is what we got.

If you have ACTUALLY watched Bama play, you will see Smart calls the defense. He is the Defensive Coordinator. Saban is the head coach though.

TALENT.
Very few defensive coaches draw up schemes that tell players to get blocked, stay blocked, lose contain, lose your man in coverage, and play the ball terribly in the air.

Yet, this defense last year with a different coordinator was in the mid 20's statistically and this one with more talent and depth is 111th.

Anyone with a clue knows it's coaching and not talent.

We were a better defense last season with most of the same players. I think Sal is over his head as a DC and the defense should be far better than what we've seen. No way they are number 120 in talent and they have been weak against everybody except Georgia State.

And just who is supposed to be teaching these kids how to shed blocks, maintain their lanes and discipline in coverage, how to properly tackle a ball carrier, and look for the ball then defend in coverage?

Guess they are supposed to show up out of high school knowing everything they need to know.

Yes, your stat statistics are correct. But meaningless. In 2008 we held Tebow to under 250 yards. We lost 30-6. Did stats matter? No. Because we had a bad defensive team.

If a person had a clue they would know that the only stat that matters is the scoreboard.

Just watching from both TV and in person it seems as though the DB's don't have the physical make up of defensive football players or football players at all. I mean how many football players walk with a "priss"? Other thing is if Dooley has recruited offensive weapaons to be able to play has he not done same for defense? If so, are we back to the Fulmer era of not developing these atheletes?

yes

wind the clock back about a year and the same argument is out there, only not about the D but about the poor running game.

one camp said it was coaching.

the other camp said no, you dumbasses, the coaching is fine -- we just don't have good O linemen and good running backs.

fast forward to this season. the coaching staff has changed (graham and pittman), while the O line and RBs are the same. and the performance on the field is night and day different.

this defense rests.
