Defense Wins Championships.

UGA traded Mark Richt for Kirby Smart because he couldn't get to the championship level. What it sounds like to me is that's what you prefer. 'Keep scoring points like mad....until we face the champions, then its ok if we can't win that one.' Is that you?
So…. Fahr Heupel?!?!

What we have now are some coaches that can coach players up. Except DB's Think back how many times this season we've been beat LONG!!! Back- up Martinez! Can you coach that!

9-11 wins is what Tennessee had in the 1990s i would take that in a New York minute
Well, you are about to get that this year.

I will admit that UT still has a puncher's chance this year, assuming TCU loses to UTx next week (I think that is what UT needs to get into the CFP). The problem then is, what are UT's chances of winning in the CFP with a defense that isn't at the championship caliber.

NO WAY!

I did not say anything like that. My OP speaks for itself. Its a common theme that people these days say 'defense wins championships' is not longer true. Those people are wrong, and UGA just demonstrated why.

Everyone who has been saying that no longer is true just got a reality check.

UT's prolific offense just got stifled by a championship caliber defense.

The Vols may still back their way into the playoffs. If they are lucky enough to get in, they better tighten up the D.

Go Vols!

Georgia’s defense was outstanding but we were our own worst enemy. Too many drives disrupted by self inflicted, pre-snap penalties. We couldn’t establish a respectable run game because we were consistently playing behind the sticks. We were too undisciplined to win a road game like that.

It does. So does a roster of 4 and 5 star players like UGA has. That's how you can get away with Stetson Bennett as your QB.

That's a fair point. I would just say that a weak offense can be covered for by a stout defense, but a weak defense is going to give up points and long drives.
Georgia and Bama have talent all over the field. Heupel has done what he could with this rosters talent level and it’s impressive. I will say this I think the old adage of defense wins championships isn’t still as accurate. I think teams with talent in the trenches win titles and we just aren’t quite there yet. You can have the best defense on earth and still lose if your Oline sucks, same thing on defense it all starts up front. Georgia exposed us in the trenches.

That's a fair point. UT's offense should take a look in the mirror over the next week or 3 and get their collective minds right because UT's defense will not win the championship. It will be all on the offense.

"Defense wins championships" is used by coaches to get players to play defense.

Defenses don't win games, much less championships.

The best defense could ever do, at the very pinnacle of its capability, is tie a game. 0-0. *

Teams win games. Offense to score some points, and defense to keep the other guy from scoring as many.

That's the way it works.

"Defense wins championships" is nothing more than a bumper sticker. A hackneyed phrase.

Teams win championships.

* okay, defenses can score safeties. And pick 6s. So technically, a defense could win a game. But that's rare. And I'd bet no defense has won a championship on its own in the modern era of football.

Its a valid point that games are won at the line of scrimmage.

Defense never won a single game in all the history of football. Much less a championship.

Pre-snap penalties have been our Achilles all year. Georgia exploited us with their pre-snap line shifts. Every time their line would shift, someone on our line would flinch. Those Georgia line stunts and shifts 100% was something they found and exploited in film study. Crowd noise was a huge factor as well. I would hope that we can make some adjustments but we are 9 games into the season at this point.

If I'm wrong, then why do so many championship coaches have such dominating defenses?

Anyway, its been fun debating with yall.

Go Vols!

One last point.

These days the catch phrase is 'complimentary football', which is also accurate. However, I stand by the belief that without a dominating defense, your chances are not as good.

Who cares. Even making it is a win for our program. Only 3 SEC schools have even made the playoffs to date.

Idk if it’s just defense though. Look at Bama Georgia last year, Bama spanks them in conference title. Arguable that Bama still wins if they have both their key wrs in the next matchup. Do you think Georgia wanted to lose that conference title? That was one of the best defenses in a great long while and yet they lost to a potent offense.

It’s never just one phase of the game. You have to be good in all 3 phases.

The most disciplined team wins the game. Erase those pre-snap penalties; this is a much different ball game. Even with all of those penalties, this was only a 2 score game. Play a clean game and we can hang with anyone in the country. Period.

I'll take 9-11 wins every season even if the defense is always questionable
I think all of us are good with that for now but it will only take a few seasons before people get sick of being second fiddle and start batting their eyelashes at defensive-minded coaches.

It wasn’t that their defense was that good. Our qb just played like ass. If he hits any of those deep balls this game is completely different. Instead he looked like Milton air mailing it.

Hooker is still the best Qb in the country IMHO, but I think he choked under the moment.

I think if we play UGA in the playoff in a neutral environment, we’ll beat them. Seriously, we didn’t play our game. And we still were right there.

A very good UGA team exposed Tennessee. The game wasn't even remotely close. Total domination on both sides of the ball
