Defense Wins Championships

Lack of offense also loses championships. Our defense is one of the best in the Nation and our lack of offense has already lost one game for us and almost two others. Championships teams have to have very Good on both sides of the ball.

Let this 60+ try to splain it to you in a way you might could understand.

Offense is your pretty little girlfriend you love having her around and being seen with her.

Defense is your big brother and a couple of friends.

Now if you go out and get into a fight, who do you want with you, your pretty little girlfriend or your big brother and a couple of friends??

I'll take the pretty girl.

Defense wins championships is BS.

Check the CFP championship games and the winning team has needed, with a few blowouts removed, around 30 points to take the win. None have "defensive struggles" in recent years.
If you don’t have a good defense you won’t be in any championship game. Sure the best teams playing in a championship are well rounded but there hasn’t been a sec championship team in recent memory that didn’t have a very good D. You not just going outscore folks and get by with a average D. Those are FACTS! GBO

So offense wins championships.

That's the obvious takeaway. You need both, not just one, to win championships.

It's weird to single out offense or defense as winning championships.

Which SEC champion team had a bad offense?

A really good defense goes a long way in keeping you in games. Even if your offense is struggling if your D is keeping the opposition in the same boat you've still got a shot even if it's having to win ugly.

Now having said the above nobody has ever won a game unless they scored more points than the opponent. Low scoring battle or high scoring shootout you still need more.

Defense wins championships...

....as long as you have an offense that can score more points than your opponent

A dominating defense can win games and a championship. It is not as exciting as a high scoring game where the team with the ball last wins - which is why some will downplay its importance.

Case in point UGA verses us 2 years ago - UGA's defense stopped us cold and the Bama game which basically was a "last team with the ball" won.

It does no good to have a team that scores a lot of points if your defense never stops the other team from scoring.

Some of you new folks would not have survived football games of the past.

Going back to 2016, the national champion has been the team that was #1 in scoring defense 4 out of 7 times. Going back to 2009, the national champion has been in the Top 10 in scoring defense 13 out of 16 times, with the exceptions being 2020 Alabama (13th), 2021 LSU (31st) and 2010 Auburn (53rd). Defense still wins championships.

Agree - but those that want the cute girlfriend are not going to agree with you.

And I see in this thread that you have some of the fans?? who feel the need to discredit the defense.

I really think some of you like things to complain about and are not happy unless you can.

Yeah, they're capable.
Out of the six games we played 3 have been agains teams that are as equally as talented we have struggled to generate a great run game and an almost non existent pass offense tells us other wise. The talent is there but they are not capable of putting it together against great defenses until they prove other wise. We will lose against Alabama by more than 10.

That is a tremendous analogy! 👍

Unfortunately, you have to score points against good teams to win championships. We're struggling to put up points against bad teams.
Fortunately, our defense has scored points for us!

Edit: But I would like to think our O, from OL, to Qb, to less than sure handed receivers, to play-calling coaches, has gotten the memo, and is about to step up.

Please tell me this a photoshopped. From what I remember of my anatomy studies, the human leg, due to limits of the ligaments, tendons, joints, and bone, disallows a 16 ton human to stand, let alone walk.
Mabel's nickname is Damn. When the water in these parts are rising. we point and say Damn Mabel. And she goes over to it and leans into it to prevent any breaching of the damn. True story

I think they are are plenty capable. Improve and focus on execution. They've shown flashes against those 3 teams. Plus, we must cut down our penalties

Here's my take. I used to coach rec league soccer (10 years). Won a few championships. One championship year, I wasn't scored upon at all and managed to score a goal or two every game. My defense was stout, smart, tough, and could move the ball back up field with ease due to their outstanding footwork and dribbling.

The next year, I moved some of the defenders up towards the scoring positions at midfield and forwards. Result: my defense was not good enough to get the ball back up field to those in the scoring positions. No championship that year.

Taught me a lesson about a strong defense. If I can keep the other team from scoring, I was always still in the game. It paid off in later years with more championships for the team.

We used to say, defense wins games and offense sells tickets. I never played sports in school but played and coached quite a bit as an adult; soccer, softball and baseball.

I believe the Vols are beginning to put it all together and that Saturday's game will go in our favor.
Go Vols
