It would seem based on the radio call and the final stats that the defense didn't do so well today. I realize we have a lot of talent coming in but this is concerning for the fall. Someone please tell me they looked better in person.

AJ didn't really play much and by all accounts our defense has played better with him than without him this spring. We really need him and Randolph back in our defense before we know what it will look like.

That being said, I think we're going to desperately need 2-4 of the incoming guys to step up this season.

We need Gaulden to play cb and/or some of the other db newcomers to step up. Saulsberry getting healthy is vital.

D Line stills lacks the push up front and the Defensive Ends are a step slow. We all knew this would be a problem with this yrs team. There is some talent on the Defense, but they just need to develop and get faster. I still think if we can stay healthy on defense, we will be good enough to stop teams. Especially at Neyland with the crowd behind them.

Couldn't go today...sucked...anyway aren't the defensive calls usually basic for these games?

It's still going to be better than Sal's 3/4 sh*t couple years ago...and maybe as a good or better than last years. Our secondary will be better for sure....as well as our line(??hope)...plus Curt is back. It's all good.

Actually though it just occurred to me that the defense would have been split into two squads today. We are not deep enough to do this. That may explain some of our questions as well.

Worley taking a keeper 48 yards is concerning. D has a long way to go IMO.

I agree, but it's also spring against their teammates and they're playing for steaks not championships. Game intensity is almost impossible to create for a scrimmage.

You're correct. Some ppl just freak out

On most of the big plays there were several backup type players in the game. Sure we can get better but some ppl are making it seem much worse without looking at who was on the field during alot of those plays. We will be better with Randolph and Saulsberry. AJ barely played today. Also, a few newcomers will help. .

AJ didn't see much action and Saulsberry didn't dress.

Hopefully the new guys coming in August will hit the ground running.

All I know is we have 17 players coming in that will form our 2 deep. Young team but very fast and talented

Gaulden, Berrys, bates, Barnett.... And more will all help our defense. Today does not say much.

I don't think it'll be as bad as some are thinking. I remember a few years ago Tyler bray ( junior year I think ) couldn't hit the side of a barn that spring and everybody freaked out. He ended up having a pretty good year slinging it all over the field. Point is its never as good as its suppose to be an never as bad as it seems .

Normally I would chalk it up to the spring game but the D has sucked the last couple years. Let's call a spade a spade here. Hope the newcomers can add some minutes.

Think about all the talent that we have that WASN'T on the field today:

Saulsberry
Randolph
Dillon Bates
Chris Weatherd
Dewayne Hendrix
Elliott and Evan Berry
Rashaan Gaulden
Todd Kelly
Cortez McDowell
Gavin Bryant
Derek Barnett
Mike Sawyers
Chuck Mosley
Joe Henderson

Plus AJ Johnson and Jason Carr have been limited with injuries. That, folks, is a lot of missing pieces on defense trying to stop the likes of a set of playmakers at RB, WR, and TE that we haven't seen in quite some while.

I don't care what year it is, either your offense looks terrible, or your defense looks terrible, or my favorite they all suck. We are playing ourselves here. The defense was vanilla, and the first team d played fine. I know it is Volnation style, but can we please not freak out over the O/W game for the next 3 months?
