Can someone explain that one to me? I've been watching CFB a long time and never heard DOG on the defense until Saturday.

What in the heck was that about? Other than another way the refs screwed us.

The rule is the defense can't mimick the offensive signals. Apparently our LB clapping to get the attention of another player is considered just that even though I don't recall any Bama players clapping like that.

In other words, it was ********. But the head ref lives in Tuscaloosa and I'd be willing to bet is actually a Bama fan. You'd think the SEC wouldn't allow that but.......they don't care. Not even the first time it's happened. Remember when the ref from the LSU game was exposed as an LSU fan....and was reffing LSU games. Just inexcusable and frankly starting to ruin football for me. It's like the WWE. NFL is starting to be the same way. The rams, colts, and dolphins all got absolutely hosed yesterday.

Anyway, rant over.

The head ref, Ken Williamson, doesn’t live in Tuscaloosa. This was debunked on Saturday night.

It’s been called more frequently the past couple of years. They basically said Herring clapping was trying to confuse the Bama offensive line. I disagree, but that’s why it was called.

I can't remember who but some team I was watching last week had like 3 in a series. I get the call but its such a natural reaction to do when trying to get someones attenion. A warning would have been nice, I know, it's not in the rules.

Why does the SEC control the officiating anyway? Not saying that the NCAA is without corruption, but conferences have a lot of internal reasons to corrupt the games at hand.

The NFL feels very wrong concerning play and officiating. I watch @ 5 min per year of the Woke NFL and 5 minutes of highlight plays. But, I'll never believe that Saints safety didnt give that last second TD to Stephen Diggs on purpose in the playoffs a few years back. No NFL or even D1 safety makes a play like that. And then the uncalled PI in the playoffs Rams v Saints that Stevie Wonder could have called. Those plays were NOT legit.

NCAA football feeling the same way more and more ... and we have replay!

In the past it's been for yelling out things like "hut hut hike" etc. This was the first time I've seen it called for a clap and probably the first time I've seen it called that far away from the center.

I’ll add that if refs are going to call that, they need to start flagging UGA for their juvenile defensive line shifts right before the snap.
I have noticed they have called UGA for defensive delay of game (exactly what they called Herring for) a couple of times this year. I don't know why they'd call a penalty on them for a DL shift though since it's completely legal. For the life of me, I don't know why more teams don't do it, since it's highly effective.

The shift is legal; the refs throw the flag on a LB who gives an audible signal to shift.

I think defenses should be allowed to say “move” or “shift” without being called for mimicking the snap.

I don’t think it’s unheard of anymore. If the defense mimics anything in the snap count, they can be penalized. It’s a thing, that’s all you need to know.

This game just made me sad for football. It’s short-sighted for the SEC and the NCAA not to ensure fairness, because the more people think officiating is unfair, the less they’re interested.

I’ve never been one to blame the refs, but this game was definitely one-sided. I don’t know how anyone could watch it and not see that.

They were calling it a good bit last year too. Sometimes they'll say "disconcerting signals" is the call. I remember hearing it the first time watching a non-Vol game and being like WTH. It was last year or the year before.

It wasn't a clap. It was a call for a smash. Closed Fist into open palm... Smash blitz

We have used it all year.

Clapping is the first thing on the officiating video where this is listed as a point of emphasis rule this year. Reason being so many teams now use a clap as their snap indicator.

The video was shown to UT’s team as part of the preseason rules presentation by the crew that came in to do one of the scrimmages. UT changed how it called defensive signals last year because of it, and it’s now a point of emphasis this season. It stinks, but you didn’t notice Heupel arguing it.

A "warning" for penalties. That's a novel idea which would result in some fun post-game threads.

To be fair I haven't seen Heupel argue much of anything this season....
