Delay of game...on defense?

When I saw this penalty and what it was about, I realized that the game was probably over at that point if they were going to be that Ticky tac about that particular defensive communication then we’re screwed.

It’s been called more frequently the past couple of years. They basically said Herring clapping was trying to confuse the Bama offensive line. I disagree, but that’s why it was called.
It was a point of emphasis for the officials this year according to the ref they have on the radio. Why we need these points of emphasis I have no idea. And if we do, let’s make offensive holding one next year.

Clapping is the first thing on the officiating video where this is listed as a point of emphasis rule this year. Reason being so many teams now use a clap as their snap indicator.

The video was shown to UT’s team as part of the preseason rules presentation by the crew that came in to do one of the scrimmages. UT changed how it called defensive signals last year because of it, and it’s now a point of emphasis this season. It stinks, but you didn’t notice Heupel arguing it.
More typical favoring offense based rules apparently. At this point I'm surprised the defense can even call out plays.

I can't remember who but some team I was watching last week had like 3 in a series. I get the call but its such a natural reaction to do when trying to get someones attenion. A warning would have been nice, I know, it's not in the rules.
I actually thought he was making a defensive call because it looked like he slammed his fist into his open hand to me. I'm not sure he was clapping

He didn't clap and the entire sideline had a problem with it.

To be fair I haven't seen Heupel argue much of anything this season....
Then you haven’t been watching very closely. He argues a lot of things that he disagrees with. He also moves on quickly enough to not interfere with calling the next play.

I don't attend games anymore (health/financial issues) so I haven't seen first hand but I don't see much on television in the way of arguing egregious calls. Opinions are like you know and this is strictly mine: I think at some point he should argue to the point of an unsportsmanlike...a huge tyrade that forces media to talk about it....avoids a fine but makes a statement.

The head ref, Ken Williamson, doesn’t live in Tuscaloosa. This was debunked on Saturday night.

That was pretty embarrassing. I can appreciate how passionate we are as a fanbase but harassing some innocent realtor put a lot of egg on our face.

I've saw this called but it was always called on the home team D with the crowd going bonkers so loud that the offense had to use claps etc.. The D would mimic to confuse lineman.'
BUT it was dead quiet when Bama had the ball, never saw that called on a D that was on the road. we have got a lot of first on penalty blunders the new time runoff rule, that was enacted caused a loss to NC in Music Bowl and then the standing over the ball rule. At LSU where we didn't have time to sub ended up with 13 on field vs LSU and they got multiple tries with added 1/2 distance to goal. We are Tennessee, the whipping boy of rules that went awry and were corrected but Vols still have the losses on their records. THX UT for being the NCAA rules guinea pig.
