Delayed decision on purpose?

The whole sports world knows that Dooley should be fired now. But what if he isn't fired? Could that be a sign that the powers that be at UT want to flex their muscle to prove we are an "academic institution" now with a languishing athletic program. We are the UNC or Duke of the south? Something is amiss in the state of the Vols. Seriously, if he isn't fired, something is really wrong.

Would cause the school to crumble.

If I had to throw out a guess, there was a method to the apparent madness. Everyone knows Tennessee's schedule was going to become considerably easier in November and so there may have been a fear that if the coach goes 8-5 and then is fired it might scare off some potential coaches, who might view firing an 8-5 coach as a quick trigger that would be applied to them. The loss today and the near loss last week probably conclusively shows that Dooley has either lost the team or just could not get them to win and his firing was entirely justified. Again, just pure speculation.

Don't read to much into why they haven't fired him yet. It's simple. They haven't found a replacement yet.

The wheels are indeed spinning behind the scene and have been for several weeks....everything will work out
UT's is now as low as it gets...nowhere to go but up
We may not get the Big Name Coach everyone wants but we will be competive once again....I know it's very hard to be patient as we are in uncharted waters, but the Vols will survive and give us something to cheer for once again

I doubt that's the case because football and athletics is such a huge part of the Knoxville economy. UT having a great academic program will only help UT but I would run Knoxville into the ground. Chapel Hill and Duke can do that because here we have the Research Triangle and UNC and Duke aren't the core of the economy like UT is.

Word is Dooley will not be fired this week since the team still has a bowl game to play for.

The decision to fire him is made and if we win out the next two weeks he will be announced as fired after the Kentucky game.

If we were to lose to Vandy and bowl game is then out of the question he would be fired that subsequent Monday.

Everyone in program very much wants a bowl game for the new coach to come in and get to know the team.

So we risk hurting recruiting and kids deciding UT is not for them while Hart and the others at UT hope Dooley can at least salvage a bowl game. Every day in recruiting matters. Waiting does nothing but hurt the chances of winning early for the next HC. JMO

We are nowhere close to the academic standards or prestige of UNC or Duke. Or Virginia. Or Vandy. We are-- or were-- a proud football school, and it would be utterly stupid for the administration to relinquish that.

I agree. He has taken this team and drove it off a cliff. Given another couple years, he could possibly go back up the mountain and drag us down the otherside face first. "No pain no gain".

He should be fired asap. But they will suck again next year. Hunter and Patterson are both going to leave. Without them, Bray will look like Eric Ainge

Yeah Bray probably will leave. So what coach in their right mind is going to want the job. You would be getting a team that pretty much has nothing

Lots of coaches will want the job. Bray, Hunter and Patterson were leaving anyway. A good coach can build quickly on the base of talent we have. We would have had a solid season this year if we'd had a decent coach. A good coach will make all the difference.

Sounds like the job for an up & comer. This is why the change should have been made last year.
