As a latecomer to TN baseball, can anyone give any insight into why TN released him? Two CWS appearances in 2001 and 2005 right? Only to be let go in 2007?

I'm guessing there is more to the story.

Thanks!

Well not really. Just a bad decision as the powers that be thought we had arrived and felt he wasn't doing enough.
Be careful what you wish for.

A little more than that. Demonico did not like his contract situation and essentially was doing contract negotiation/griping in the media. He misread his leverage. Delmonico's buyout wasn't too bad so Hammy fired him so he could put his stamp on the program (i.e., a cheap and uninspiring hire)

Strange but I don’t think any one has hired him since as a head coach.

Hindsight is 20/20
Hamilton did not make the decision in a vacuum. The barnyard alumni base wanted him gone. It was all or nothing with Rod. After 2005, those teams really under performed but there were big injuries as well.

The APR was terrible because Rod trusted the guys to do the right thing and a few the guys didn’t. Starting ace pitchers didn’t go to class for months.

Where I disagree with Hamilton is obvious to everyone who was here (or Gridscape- I can’t recall when we all switched) was the hiring of the biggest mouth breathing moron as a head coach. And it appears MH did it because of these magical Clemson and Jack Leggett powers. You remember Clemson and their packed trophy case.

IIRC, Tennessee‘s graduation rates were so low, the school was docked two full scholarships, making the situation even worse.

One of the contributing factors was Delmonico was spending a lot of time with other baseball projects outside his Tennessee head coaching duties. The administration felt his Tennessee duties were not his top priority.

Delmonico didn’t make his guys go to class and our APR slipped to the point that we were going to have major scholarship reductions and postseason bans.

and other extracurricular projects that weren’t baseball related if you catch my drift……his demise was is own undoing, the University had no other choice. Which is more than likely why he’s never been hired since.

To put a finer point on that, I don’t think he’s been hired as a college head coach. For a period of time he was on Florida State staff. Also he was the head coach in the world baseball classic for, if I recall correctly, Denmark. while most people will roll their eyes for being the head coach of Denmark, their country also includes their territories in the Caribbean. They knocked off some of the heavy weights that year.

You might be thinking of Holland (the Dutch). Denmark is Vikings. Don't think they raided in the Caribbean.

I think there were other distractions - but he has 3 of the nicest, most polite kids you would ever hope to meet. Good ball players, but just great kids imho.

I saw Todd Raleigh at the state HS tournament back when my son played. He seemed more interested in the hot dog he was eating that the 3 D1 players playing in the game.
Don't even get me started, Gorilla ball, soft ball uniforms, I was at a tournament at Farragut and in addition to focusing on his hot dog, he went out of his was to spout how Tennessee had recruited too many local kids including Farragut in the past and he was going to
put an end to that. He just came across as a complete jerk, and had a complete team revolt against him when he was at Western Carolina or wherever it was he coached prior to U.T.
He was a complete embarrassment and not qualified to drive the team bus.

Three CWS appearances; don't forget 1995, too, plus several other seasons when we went to the regionals only to be ousted. Delmonico was a mixed bag at Tennessee, but on balance, he was a good baseball coach. Delmonico almost dared Tennessee to fire him and they obliged. In hindsight it could have been patched up, but there was little effort by either side to do anything about it.
