Bloomberg.com: News

President Barack Obama underscored the dilemma by addressing both sides of the argument. In an interview with ABC News yesterday, he said unemployment approaching 10 percent is something “we wrestle with constantly.” He added that spending more borrowed money is “potentially counterproductive.”

Let me ask you guys this, seriously, if a second stimulus bill of say, $400 billion, went directly to jobs creation, with no pork projects in it for anyone, would you support it? Or at least not oppose it?

what do you define as directly to jobs creation?

but i wouldn't support any additional spending anyway. the economy is already showing signs of turning. the only reason we would need a second stimilus plan is because obama was too stupid to implement a plan that put money into the system immediately.

If it went to projects that broke ground in the next 6 to 12 months, or gave tax breaks to encourage growth I would consider it.

I don't think this is something that should be rushed into however. I think IF there is another stimulus proposed it should be better thought out, scrutinized and implemented than the last bill we were given. I think the last bill was so full of garbage and so poorly thought out and sold to the American people that another round will be hard to justify to the people.

The economy is showing signs of turning, but really in very narrow ways. With unemployment where it is, the auto industry in terrible shape, and home prices flat at best and with no construction, I think you have to say that there are significant sectors of the economy where there is no reason for optimisim in even the next five years and beyond such that failure to do anything to ignite the general economy and those sectors in particular may result in their becoming a drain on those sectors making a come back.

I realize your complaints -- and agree with many of them - about the first stimulus package. But that's not the question I am posing.

Why do we need another stimulus bill? Why couldn't the first one have went directly to jobs creation with no pork?

Surely you're not suggesting the Obama Messiah made a mistake with the first bill.

How about you take 1 billion of that and force early retirement on people 55 or older in the workforce. Give them a million a piece but make them buy a GM vehicle and a home on the market. After that, let them spend it on whatever they want to spend it on.

Open up plenty of jobs and it's cheaper.

That was great e-mail. It makes a lot of sense too, very practical. Not that our government would understand being practical in the least.

I'd rather cut their social security.

I think OE's laughing icon answer is the best to this question - the fundamental flaw with this scenario is that Congress and this administration could focus 400 billion on jobs creation.

That said, my answer is NO. Even if they could put it to jobs I think the negatives outweigh the positives.

Here's my answer - take that $400 billion out of the 700 billion or so THAT HASN"T BEEN SPENT YET of the original bill and do what should have been done in the first place.

Cut it after they have paid into it all their working lives? :nono:

It's not like paying in is optional. I want every damn nickel out of it.

i pay into lots of taxes that aren't optional and never plan on seeing a cent out of it. it has always been a tax, never has it been a retirement program.

That would be part of taking the million dollars. Take it and you get no social security

Done! The problem is old people don't spend money on anything. I have a client who is worth around $10 mil that recently asked me if she could afford to buy fresh strawberries.

I have a better idea. Before we touch SS, end welfare 100% to able bodied people.

A large portion of the leeches have NEVER held a job.

When Obama tells me the sun is shining, I leave the house with an umbrella and raincoat.
