Derek Jeter wins 5th gold glove

They should keep Jeter at a reasonable price, the guy is an icon.

But there are dozens upon dozens of guys in MLB with better range at SS, he needs to be playing first or second.

That's the thing -- the Yankees already have better, younger players at 1B, 2B, and 3B, so there's nowhere to move Jeter. And no team serious about winning the AL can afford to sign a LF or DH with Jeter's stats to a long-term contract.

All I know is that if I were a Red Sox fan, I'd be desperately hoping that the Yankees and Jeter work something out. I would want him as a fixture in the middle of the infield and the top of the lineup for as long as possible.

Jeter's agent, Casey Close, recently called Jeter's negotiations with the Yankees "baffling." He argued that the team is not looking at Jeter's 16-year body of work in New York and is instead focusing on his age and off year in 2010.

Uh, he's 36 years old, he hit .270 last year, and he's talking about playing for seven more seasons. Of course they're not "looking at [his] 16-year body of work." When you're 36, it's not called an "off year," it's called getting old.

This trainwreck is sort of hilarious.

I am enjoying the fact that the new Steinbrenners are looking at the books instead of treating ownership as a hobby.

Jorge and Mariano are still commodities of sorts, with their ability and legacies...Jeter is lacking on the ability end, he is turning down anywhere from $15-21m depending what you believe, yet nostalgia aside he isn't a $10m player.

I doubt that they mean it, though I'm impressed that management has brought the pistols to the field outside of town at sunrise...

Didn't they offer 21 million over 3 years? He isn't worth half of that.

He's an average player, of course when the media falls over themselves in your honor for well over a decade I guess it's easy to get a big head.

I have a ton of respect for the guy, he is clutch and a winner but he is also by far the most overrated player that I have ever watched in any sport in my lifetime.

My guess is that Jeter won't like what he hears in the open market if he does decide to test it and will end up signing with the Yanks, I cannot imagine him in another uniform and actually would like to see him be one of those rare players that plays his whole career for one team.

Totally agree, GahLee. I can only think that this is part of the Jeter/Arod feud, and Jeter is miffed that ARod is signed to age 42 and the club isn't willing to do the same with him.

He is a well below average fielder, and, even if his offense makes a move towards his career averages, he is a below average hitter at any position outside of the middle infield. I'm personally enjoying this, wondering how Cashman will put out the barn fire.

The Yanks will be fine without him, if they do decide to part ways. At this point they could pull a minor leaguer up to hit .270 and drive in 50 runs.

His leadership is something that the team might miss but with a rotation of Lee/Sabathia/Hughes it won't really matter.

Didn't think the Yanks brass had it in them, but thank God they do.

Only makes me feel better about their future dealings.

Yeah, it's really not that easy.

It is when yiou have a farm system worth a damn...he is very replacable, hence him still not being signed.

He is only going to continue to decline, people don't get better at his age.

At this point he is average to below average for his position in every single way.

They could get a guy equal in caliber for a fourth of the money, maybe even a fifth of it.

The Yankees need to keep playing hardball with him, which I think they will, the offer was more than generous, it's like throwing money in the ocean if you ask me.

Jeter is only killing that image he so loves.

Yep, the club played their cards perfectly on this one. He'll end up taking that $45m over 3 years, as the quotes coming out of the front office seem to imply that, in a game of chicken, they've chucked the steering wheel out the window.

Agreed, and he has placed himself in an extremely weak position- either bow his head and take what he has been offered, or turn his back on his "Yankee For Life" mantra and hope someone is willing to overpay for the bragging rights of having the next "Mr. 3000" on their team.
