Detroit loses 25% of its population

While I technically don't live in Detroit city proper, I do live in the met area and I have to admit, I like living here. The weather sucks but for the most part I've really enjoyed living here.

And there are decent areas of the city. It's not all like a movie set for some distopian future world. There are cool places to go in the city. There are also places that I wouldn't go but you could say that about a lot of cities
in our country. The reality is that there has been a major leadership vacuum in the city administration and an over-reliance on one single industry to provide jobs and attract potential residents. These problems will have to be faced over the next couple of decades.

But in my two and a half years of living here, I've met tons of people who are still proud to be from Detroit and believe that the city will come back. I can't help but share in their optimism.

which has been their mantra for 25 years. Greektown is cool and I think the casinos was the big kickoff to the "re-building" of the city, but I don't think there has been much more progress made since, has there?

They need to get Jeff Daniels crackin', that should turn it around! Detroit is pretty bleak right now since they have depended on one industry this whole time. They need some leadership to get in there and broaden their horizons. Will be hard as long as Mich is not a right to work state tho.

If Detroit keeps on electing corrupt, criminal democrats like Kwame Kilpatrick, it will never recover.

Yeah, the casinos are a little overrated in my opinion. I like the Greektown area, but it's really too small to make a big difference. There is a growing community of young people moving to the city because it's so cheap to live there. Mostly young artist and hipster types that move into those old warehouses, but hey, Detroit will take whoever they can get. And there is a small sect of young business owners putting in some major time and money to try and get stuff going, but again, it's still too small to make that big of a difference. That's why this is going to be a decades long process.

I believe the city is in the process of consolidating their borders to focus on land usage and getting people to move back into the city. But the problem with that is who's going to take the land that Detroit doesn't want anymore? Having a fire sale of property isn't going to get them anywhere when the potential buyers want to just sit on it and wait until the value increases.

There are a myriad of public issues to address when it comes to bringing in new residents and increasing the tax base. But hey, Detroit fell to 3rd in the nation in violent crime last year! Something to build on.

*a great bit of progress has been made IMO when a new Slow's bbq location opened near Wayne State. I'm from the south and have sampled a variety of delicious bbq's from across the country, but i have to say, Slow's is in the top 3. Flame if you want, but I stand by my gut.

The only place I got BBQ from was Nikola's (sp) in Southfield.
