Devonta Gaines brought in for Defense and did his job

The kid plays w a lot of passion and he came in and did his job on defense. Tough to sit on the bench all game and then hit FTs especially in a moment like that. I’m sure he’ll throw up some more FTs in practice this week.

Anyone remember Darius Washington going to the line down 1 vs Louisville in the CUSA championship game? Make 2 and they go dancing. He missed both. Brutal for a great player like him. It can happen to anyone let alone a guy like Gaines
dont forget current players and future players read this stuff

Quite honestly, no one who understands body language had any belief that DG was going to step up and hit those shots. He walked down the floor like he wished he had never been put in that spot, looked scared to death when the official handed him the ball and then it was...well, ugly. He has zero confidence in himself, and I told the group of family members (UK fans) I was watching the game with, as soon as he was fouled, that he had no shot at hitting either one of them. I'd bet my house on an 0-2.

Yep, like I said earlier when he drew the foul he was fired up. But when he realized that meant he had to shoot FTs, the minute he stepped to the line you could see the stage fright.

Not really. Makes 2 and we are up one pt and have a chance to win. So at that moment that had everything to do with winning and losing. Dude just choked. Hey at least he didn’t air ball them.

Funny how you go after people in game threads, espeically Titan game threads for posting emotional drivel and then you go into this emotional drivel and also pretty much move the goalposts of what was just said.

Not that I'm surprised in the least.

Almost like more goes into winning or losing the game than two free throws.....

I was down on him after it happened but yes it's not like in the grand scheme of the game that is THE reason we lose. Turning it over 20 times and blowing about 3-4 fast breaks adds to that, blowing a 15 point lead does that, etc. That was just the thing we'll fixate on. I mean if he hits both we're up 1 but Bama has plenty of time to score the winning basket so if they converted we're back to whining about Barnes not winning a "big game".

Blaming Gaines soley is like blaming Bill Buckner for the WS blowing the 86 WS. He made an error that ended the game but he didn't blow the 2 run lead with 2 outs, nor did he make the team lose Game 7. He was simply the scapegoat. Just like Steve Bartman with the Cubs, he didn't make Alex Gonzalez botch a routine double play that would have ended the inning at 3-3.

Emotional drivel? You are the queen of that.
Here are the facts. UT was down 1 and Gaines missed two free throws. Those are facts. You can bring up turnovers and all that but we had a chance to go ahead with 25 seconds left and dude choked.

No one makes more excuses for losing than UT fan. Many people want to say well he was guarding the SEC player of the year and he did his job, this SEC player of the year averages 10 points a game it’s not like he’s out there averaging 25. I really don’t blame Gaines though, it’s not his fault, he shouldn’t have been out there in the first place.

I maybe mistaken but the Alabama player walked

Yes he did. On the whole the refs did a good job but that should have been a travel. The foul on the Bama player in the scrum that followed was marginal and most likely if not a make up call at least a way to get play stopped before someone was injured. Fine line between "letting them play" and keeping the game in control. Overall refs were good. Gaines makes both FT's its probably a different outcome. Tough spot coming in cold off the bench.

Yep agree he shouldn’t have been out there. Someone mentioned it another thread just don’t switch that or let Pons guard him.

To me this isn’t in Gaines it’s on Barnes. He has a habit of making bad decisions in late game situations.

Sure thing Mr. "I'm going to bitch about Tannehill no matter what happened on the play".

Here are facts: You completely ignored the point made just so you keep keep bitching about what you want to focus on. And also facts, just because you want to ignore things like "turnovers" because they actually hurt your point doesn't make them go away.

Did Bama not turn it over a million times too? We had a chance to take the lead and he missed the free throws. Who cares what happened before that. We had an opportunity to take the lead.

Tannehill played like crap in the playoff game and we lost.

There is no excuse for a Power 5 player to miss both free throws. I like Gaines' defense, but he has consistently missed lay ups and now free throws.

Here are the facts. UT down 1 and Bama has the ball, looking to increase the lead. The Vols, led by the defense of Gaines, got a critical stop.

It’s not as though you can pick the snippet you want just to try to prove your point. The whole game is a running snippet

We do not recruit players to play defense only. Make 1ft kid. It was the double bonus too. Everybody including himself knew those free throws had no chance.
He is shooting 22% from the field and 50 % from the free throw line for the year. I only watched one of two on replay, but would make a case that it is hard for a person that is on a high school basketball team to be that far off on a free throw. Way, way, way off the mark. People miss free throws every day, but there was way more of the ball outside and left of the cylinder than there was anywhere near the basket. He barely caught a piece of the basket. He is athletic and did play well on defense but - when he has the ball it is scary.

When it gets down to winning time it is not just a snippet of a game. Good grief. Not hard to understand but I can continue explaining.

Football belongs to Bama and now they win at basketball. Maybe Bama can go on and win baseball, softball, tennis and everything else too. Wouldn’t that be fantastic!

They’re probably going to win the league in softball.

I believe every college basketball player should be able to hit at least 1 of 2 free throws (which Devonte Gains did not do). I’ve heard from coaches and radio shows that Gains “did his job” By stopping Jones . First, if he was the best defender to stop Herb Jones on the final Florida possession, why was he not in there the entire second half while Jones was running roughshod over our other choices to defend him. College basketball players practice free throws “everyday”, and they have done so since biddy league ball. I understand the first one, with being cold and nervous, but no excuse for a division 1 player not shooting 50% From the line. That would have tied the game. Bad coaching decision in many ways.

College players don’t practice free throws everyday with advancing to the SECT finals on the line.

50% free throw shooters miss 2 in a row about once every 4 times when shooting 2. They also make both about once every 4 times. They make one of two about half the time. So the odds of making at least one was 75%. This happened to be the 25%.

Thank you, you just proved me correct. Odds definitely are in the favor of him hitting at least one, but not that time, lol.

Fact is, Bama had the opportunity to go up two possessions with 29 left, and dude made them eat the possession with an incredible effort on D

He should have never been recruited to UT.
Clearly not a SEC Player. Anyone of us can shoot better than him

Yeah, but not many could get the stop he got. I could be a 100% ft shooter and still be way worse at basketball than Gaines and I’m a pretty athletic guy.
