We need Ramar Smith and then Lofton will be a tough one to stop. No point guard, we are 3rd in the east.

We need to make out of hte 2nd round before we start getting the mentality of "elite 8/final four or bust".

i think we should be capable of making it to the sweet 16....anything after that is gravy.

I agree. Baby steps. First you need to make the tournament for a number of consecutive years, 4-5 at least. A couple of runs to the Sweet 16 mixed in there. It gives you credibility with the elite talent and in college basketball if no where else there is a real building process that must go on. That's why you see the same teams at the top year in and year out.

no body is patient enough for that...with the talent we will have here for the next couple of years, it is not unreasonable to expect to make it to the sweet 16...maybe this year, maybe not. a lot depends on Ramar smith....

i understand what you are getting at....and to a point i would agree with the long term success of the program (wow that sounds familiar)....but getting in to the tourney to me is like going to the Music city bowl....yeah it's nice and all, but i'd rather be in the Peach bowl (secon round) or the Cotton Bowl (sweet 16) or the Citrus Bowl (elite 8) or the Sugar Bowl (final 4) or BCS nt game (champ game).

i wonder how many fans would be satisfied year in and year out to just go to the Music City bowl?

Well, as a Florida fan, we had a string of consecutive tournament appearances and that was great and all, but as you point out, you've got to get to the second weekend to really feel like you've done anything. Florida made an Elite Eight Run and of course the FF a few years back. But if memory serves it had been a few years since they'd hung around for the Sweet 16.

Donovan built on that and we didn't really have a huge glaring weakness this year because of that. I maintain that UT's problem this past year was a real deficiency in the post. If you get into the tournament for a few years in a row and people start to talk about you, and you get to the Sweet 16 here or there, then that all makes a difference when it comes time to scout the big men.

Looking back on it, Florida has been very lucky to have one coach at the helm for awhile now. I think that consistency matters. You guys have Pearl and he is clearly ultra enthusiastic and a heckuva a gameday coach. His rectruiting seems to be excellent and he's obviously looking to make UT a standard first at the top of the SEC standings and then, by virtue of that, an NCAA tournament team.

As that all takes hold, there is no reason that UT shouldn't really excel. Would help if you got some players that had nice NBA careers and made some good $ coming out. Florida has a few out there right now. Haselm on the Heat comes to mind. Schintzius had some success in the pros, too. That's what the upper talent wants to see -- path to the NBA and the big $.

That takes some time.

Schintzius cashed some checks in the pros, that's it. Andrew Declerq had a more productive career than that oaf.

You have teams like James Madison showing up in the final for

George Mason didn't make too great of an impression on you did they? :)

Off topic but who else was at the game when they threw tennis balls on the court at Schintzius? That was classic!

WHile UNC is absolutely loaded with young talent..I'd have to switch #1 and #2..UF's experience has to be an edge over those baby Heels! :devilsmoke:

On the topic of the Vols at #18 - even though I'm a fan - this may be a little high, because we still don't know if Ramar Smith will be elligible. Plus replacing a point guard can be tough, and I thought C.J. Watson was a pretty good one. We also don't know how these freshman will respond to SEC basketball, or to the big games pre-SEC (Texas, Memphis, etc). I have a great deal of faith in Coach Pearl's coaching ability, and, hopefully, by the end of the year - when it really matters anyway - we will be a top 20 type team, and these newcomers will be playing well and contributing. After last year, I know not to count out a Coach Pearl coached team.

He probably has never been accused of this, but I think Vitale may be partial to ACC teams. - LOL! Because on the topic of Dickie V's top 40 - I don't see how Florida can't be the preseason #1, returning five starters from a national championship team. GO VOLS !!

I like the personnel Kansas has better than either of those teams.

At least the SEC is well represented with 3 teams in his top 10. (Alabama should be tough this year I believe with Ronald Steele & Jermareo Davidson.) -- Also, we are ahead of Kentucky, and that's always a good thing. :)

As far as teams outside of the SEC, I agree - Kansas is absolutely loaded!! Brandon Rush & Mario Chalmers outside, Julian Wright & Sasha Kaun inside - the Jayhawks look pretty formidable, and I would rank them above the Tarheels. We all know what Vitale thinks about ACC hoops, though. "It's awesome, baby!!"

Don't forget that KU also adds Sherron Collins and Darrell Arthur.
