I say ban for the rest of this season and all of next, at least.

Does anybody know the precedent of punishment by MLB for players assaulting umpires?

so being a skilled player makes it ok to assalt someone with a bat , hopefully the next mugger you meet in NY won't be a future pro athelete who just get released because of his atheletic prowess
Juan Marachal and Bert Campaneras did far worse with a bat. It doesn't make it OK, but this is overblown. It's not like he bashed the guy in the head.

What did Alomar get for spitting on Hirschbeck? 10 games?

From the video, you can't even tell if he was looking at the ump when he did it... he could've just been nonchalantly flipping the bat in the general direction of the ump... I almost doubt he might to plunk the guy.

Umpires get bumped all the time in arguments. The only comparable incident I can think of is when Roberto Alomar spit in an umpire's face. I think all he got was 5-7 games, but I think striking someone with a bat is a little more serious.

How many games did Carl Everret get for his little mixup with an ump? I'm thinking it was 20 games or so...

Heard on ESPN radio earlier that Pete Rose got 30 days for shoving Dave Pallone. That was quite a few years ago but of course I am old enough to remember.

That's accurate. It happened in '88, the year before Pete got the heave -ho for good. Pallone was another incompetent stooge.
