Do rankings really matter?

Yes, they matter. You won a national champioship this year with good coaching and a talented roster. Got to have good coaching and talent. There is no substitute. Its like a plane crash.. it isnt supposed to happen but it does. Like wise some talented classes fall through whether it be overrated, bad coaching, team chemistry, etc.

NO, they dont matter. You need to have good recruiting classes but winning "signing" day doesnt mean you win the real thing.

the "recruiting title" dont matter right. but the meat behind it does. top 5-10 class compared to 25-30 or worse is a HUGE talent gap.

Yes. Period. Does a no 1 class insure a nat championship? No. But if you are not consistently in the top five year in and year out, you won't win one. Someone posted on here a link to stats showing the odds that a five star will be an all American vs. Odds a three star would be. Anybody who knows that a repost would be good. It was like 150:1 for a five star vs. 450:1 for a three star. I know I'm not exactly on the numbers, but I'm close. When did we win a national championship? When we had a no. 1 class sandwiched with top five classes. Who have had consistent top five classes? USC, Texas, Alabama, florida, lsu. Look at the four years prior to these teams playing for the championship and u see great recruiting. Hell, we won one with great talent and average coaching and so did lsu (the hat) and Texas(Mack is a good recruiter and seems to be a solid person, but not an x/os genius).

There have been soooooo many threads about the importance of recruiting rankings or stars. I'm going to make a bold prediction here.

If tomorrow goes very well, there will be tons of threads about how important it is pulling together a top rated class and how were on our way to championships because of it with examples like this Who have had consistent top five classes? USC, Texas, Alabama, florida, lsu. Look at the four years prior to these teams playing for the championship and u see great recruiting. from guy above.

If tomorrow does not go well, all the threads will be about how these recruiting services are really overrated and its about player development not talent walking in and we'll all be A-ok with what we've got with lots of examples like Nick Reviez, Al Wilson, and Colt McCoy as supporting evidence.

Getting the right players is more important than numbers, I broke down in another thread where at LSU the 3 stars had a higher success rate of contributing than the 5 stars, with that said, it's nice to have a bunch of 4stars that contribute.

Numbers are really just someone's opinion. I think you want to have even recruiting, it's good to have mix of guys that work together and if you are constant from year to year that really helps.

Boise State puts a team out there with people that wouldn't even be walk-ons on tennessee or lsu, yet they can beat anyone on any given Saturday.

same is true on every messageboard. on the cal board people like to bring up the one 2 star guy we got who turned into a first rounder as evidence stars don't matter. unfortunetly he's the only one.

All the 5 star recruits in the world won't win Boise State a national championship, either.

Size matters.

I think Boise State provided a few years ago that they could compete and win, you should go talk to OK.

SCs first national championship came with a quite a few unheralded recruits. i agree. you need the combination. the role players who can defer to the greater good and the elite playmakers.

....what we have here is a seal here and a seal here .....and we run it in the alley.

Dont make any sense, but popped into my head. Both coaching and talent is important, but one point Ill make is that the Yankees dont win every year, and the Twins are in the playoffs every year. Substitute football teams in there like Texas and then Boise State.

huge difference between competing in a one and done type situation and competing week in and week out to win a national championship.

dont get me wrong I do think some players are not evaluated properly or become 5 star players after a few years in college, but as a whole more 4* & 5* recruits pan out than not. Coaching is a huge factor but great coaching with little talent make for 0 champions these days.

Lets face it, the secret of recruiting is finding the most ready highly rated players you can get (like your 5* players.) Then mixing in the most talented lower rated players that can be coached up to their potential.

In the end those that say rankings matter are right and those that say coaching are right. The most prominent coaching staffs are the ones that consistantly do both.

i think when a kid actually reaches his full potential is very important and that is impossible to rate. That is why some 2 stars blow up in college and some undrafted kids blow up in the NFL. Its also why the highly rated players fail to live up to their billing because they peak at a certain level. What you want are guys like Berry who continue to improve through the levels of competition.
