Do rankings really matter?

I think Boise State provided a few years ago that they could compete and win, you should go talk to OK.

As my point and my actual words were national championships, this is epic reading comprehension fail on your part.

Obviously I think Boise St. deserved a chance both last year, and when they beat OU.

huge difference between competing in a one and done type situation and competing week in and week out to win a national championship.

Oh I agree Boise State would have a hard time reaching a SEC championship because of the lack of depth and the pounding, however if they ever do reach the NC they certainly do have the ability to win it.

I would say have even recruiting from year to year and having a good mix of guys that want to learn and want to play.

From my experience I would take 1 Jacob Hester(2 star) over a 1000 Ryan Perrilloux(5 star). You do make a point about being able to compete week in and week out, I don't think you have to be in the top 10 every year but you still need players.

i think when a kid actually reaches his full potential is very important and that is impossible to rate. That is why some 2 stars blow up in college and some undrafted kids blow up in the NFL. Its also why the highly rated players fail to live up to their billing because they peak at a certain level. What you want are guys like Berry who continue to improve through the levels of competition.

Our 5 star guys haven't really panned out to be superstars earlier in the decade but now it's improving.

Our 3 stars have a better rate of success imho.

Another huge part of the equation is character. If a kid has tons of talent and gets kicked off the team, what difference does it make? We have sure had plenty of those kids and then it doesn't matter what the recruiting class was ranked because the kids that propelled you to that ranking aren't on the field.

i feel that they do matter. first off it is good press. also, i think a good recruiting class this year perhaps keeps your program higher in the minds of next years prospects. when you couple that with success on the field, it just makes a school seem more appealing to go to.

aside from that, i think they can be a real good indicator of where your program is headed down the road. while you do have 5 and 4 star busts as well as 1 and 2 star all conference players, most of the highly regarded ncaa players were a 3, 4, or 5 star recruit. atleast that is my observation.

look at some of our greatest players this year (per rvls) and my thoughts.

crompton was a 4 star qb, who eventually panned out
hadesty was a 4 star - well worthy
g jones was a 4 star athelete - well worthy
berry was a 5 star player - all american
d moore was a 3 star player - under-rated
chris walker was a 4 star lb - developed into a great de
dan williams was a 3 star dt - solid dt
rico mccoy was a 4 star lb - maybe under-rated
chris scott was a 4 star guard - great starter
janzen jackson was a 5 star db - appears worthy
montori hughes was a 2 star dt - under-rated
ben martin was a 5 star de - appears maybe worthy
dennis rogan was a 3 star rb - major under-rated cb
luke stocker was a 3 star te - should have been a 4 star
jac mcclendon was a 4 star o-lineman - a solid starter.
wes brown was a 4 star dt - well worthy
nick reveiz was a walk on - a phenominal over-achiever.

some recent others

ryan karl was a 2 star safety - solid lb
chris donald was a 5 star lb - over-rated
lennon creer was a 4 star rb - over-rated?
kenny oneal was a 5 star jc wr - who never panned out.
brent vinson was a 5 star ath - over-rated, 3 star maybe
walter fisher was a 5 star jc de - over-rated, but ok
quiton hancock was a 3 star wr - likely over rated as well
demonte bolden was a 4 star dt - turned out ok
demitrice morley was a 5 star db -worthy talent wise
austin rogers was a 3 star wr - solid wr, under-rated?
lucas taylor was a 4 star wr - worthy of the rank
josh briscoe was a 3 star wr - under-rated
josh mcneil was a 4 star center - who was solid
slick shelly was a 4 star wr - over-rated
erik ainge was a 4 star qb - well worthy
robert ayers was a 4 star lb - well worthy
jonathan heffney was a 4 star db - all american
arian foster was a 3 star rb - under-rated
inqy johnson was a 2 star db - very under-rated
anthony parker was a 3 star o-lineman - all american
elix wilson was a 2 star db - who became an amazing lb
jerod mayo was a 4 star lb - well worthy of a 5 star
robert meachem was a 5 star - well worthy

few booms, few busts, but pretty close over all.

It doesn't mean a thing at the end of the season. But the higher a team's recruiting raanking, the higher the likelihood that they are getting the most talented players. Having the most talent is not definitive of success, but it certainly helps.

Look at UGA on that list and where has it gotten them.

That's where coaching comes into play. All that talent simply isn't getting the coaching it needs. With all the talent UGA has gotten, there is no reason OTHER THAN COACHING for them to not have won a national championship.

Rankings are subjective but really the only way we can judge how recruting is going for a school. Recruiting on the other hand matters greatly, just see how much work these coaches put into it.
