With the thought process that anyone can transfer and be immediately able to play the NCCA is going to have to re-think the 25 rule and have transfers apply only to the 85.
It was only mentioned that returning seniors would not count towards the 85 counter limit. Nothing about the signing limit.I think that this is a special year due to covid easing of the rule where graduate transfers or seniors who are transferring do not count against the 25 limit .Or to put it another way seniors and graduate transfers will be allowed to exceed the 25 limit ....this is my understanding of what the NCAA has done to help ameliorate covid impact .
Even if "78"...then count our seniors. We are fine regardless. One thing to keep in mind, we're probably self-imposing punishments this year anyway.
Heupel's contract language seems to indicate an expected punishment of 1-year bowl ban and 7 scholarship reduction. Any more than that would trigger an automatic extension.
So assuming that 7 scholarships isn't spread over multiple years, I think we're operating with 78 scholarships, not 85 this year anyway.
what if 25 graduate and 20 transfer--now you are down to 65 scholarship players if transferring in counts against your 25. Not having to sit a year will cause a lot more players to transfer. Why? They are just getting rid of the penalty of sitting a year for those that elect to transfer, not totally retooling squad configuration rules.
The supply and demand will balance out in the long run. As long as incoming transfers count against the 25, demand will be limited.what if 25 graduate and 20 transfer--now you are down to 65 scholarship players if transferring in counts against your 25. Not having to sit a year will cause a lot more players to transfer.

But they have to have another school to burn one of their 25 to go anywhere. Those are precious. Our situation with OK is odd but I have not checked their signing day results.
This year we may be HELPED by enough seniors coming back for free year like VELUS. We may not have in 100 range of scholly kids like some schools but hopefully have enough for balance. Bet we still limit dress to 105 and travel to 70. PWOs ???? Don’t know. More is better BUT.
Well logically if seniors are allowed an additional year the 85 limit will certainly be exceeded in most cases.Something will have to be done to ease that rule on 25 initial counters especially for programs like UT where you are having large numbers of people in transfer portal with Coach firing....and the one year rule is passed so they become immediately eligible to play otherwise some programs will possibly be down to 50 scholarsips or less .The best way to offset that is to allow one for one offset of transfers in and transfers out .It was only mentioned that returning seniors would not count towards the 85 counter limit. Nothing about the signing limit.
I have not seen any legislation that states a transfer would not still count against your signees limit. Logically, I would also expect that would be a huge deal (and well known) if true. Alabama could just ask every talented senior in the land to come there as a freebie against their numbers. Since that has not been something discussed and the NCAA has not said that outright, I expect that is not happening. They would have needed to say "transferring seniors will not count against the signing limit for the new school" essentially.
