It's awfully tough for a team to fire itself up to play unquestionably it's best game of the season - lose in that game - and then turn around and do it all over again for the next game. The bye week for UT may be it's best tonic for working out the doldrums from the UGA game and focus on USC, but it will have a tough task ahead for itself. Sometimes it's better for a team to continue on with another opponent to focus on the next week, instead of dwelling on a tough loss for 14 days...
USC's biggest issue thus far this season is it's passing defense: overall their defense hasn't been too bad: for most of their games, it's actually been decent to almost stellar against high passing offenses such as UNC and UCF. USC has actually played against 4 opponents that currently have top-40 passing offenses, nationally (UNC, UGA, Vanderbilt, and UCF). They were containing UCF's offense decently until the 10-minute mark of the 4th qtr, and even UK only had 301 total offensive yards. But UCF scored 15 quick 4th qtr. points, and UK scored all of their 21 pts in the 4th, so those last moments of those games made those games ugly wins overall in Gamecock Nation's minds. Murray threw for over 300 yds, and Bortles had 350+ yds but was being held well under 200 until that 4th qtr., and UNC's and Vandy's QBs were held to under 200 and under 150 yds, respectively...
The Vols will come into the USC game most likely last in the SEC in passing offense and total offense. This may help cancel out USC's defensive inconsistencies (9th in SEC in passing D). And USC has a slightly better rushing O than UT (5th vs 7th), while also having a much better rushing D (5th vs 11th).
Stats typically paint a fuzzy picture as to how a team matches up with another. Once the conference schedule gets underway and results versus common opponents can be compared, one can get a clearer picture. Right now it looks like UT can only match up against USC's weakness on defense with it's own weakness on offense, while USC's own passing offense (6th in SEC) matches up positively against UT's passing D (10th)...
