When Tennessee was flying high with a No. 8 ranking entering November, hope sprang eternal.

But as former Tennessee quarterback Pat Ryan said: ``The worst thing you can do is give people hope.’’

Hope was there. Hope is gone.

When it comes to D1 football, or any level sport for that matter, hope and luck are the only 2 things that differentiate duds from champs.

And the point of this very enlightening and educational thread is what?

I would not say that Ohio State, Arkansas etc have been "lucky".. they are talented

We still have games left to play in that thing I enjoy most of all.... A Tennessee Football Season.

Can we ease up on shoveling the dirt on the season until it's over???

*You should really understand I'm not firing at this particular thread, so much as the general mood around here this week.

Beat Vandy!!!

Arkansas is lucky they beat Vanderbilt by 2 and they are lucky that they beat Bama by 1.

Everyone can enjoy the last three games but the dirt is pretty much already on the grave. It's hard to get excited about Vandy, KY and a mediocre bowl appearance, not that there are any assured victories in there.

Hope is great, but if you watched especially the South Carolina game with any objectivity whatsoever, you knew we probably didn't have the talent on defense to win the SEC. Further injuries on defense and the loss of Ainge pretty much sealed the deal on the last 2 games.

Now see for me, it's not at all hard to get excited about a ballgame.... See Vandy, UK, and a bowl game... or see no game at all... For me, I want the former....

I respect where you're coming from 'billy, and I know I'm not required to read or post about any of this.

It's just sometimes.....

It was also pretty obvious as early as the Florida game that we weren't going to be able to run the ball well enough to beat good teams -- both from the standpoint of being one-dimensional on offense, and being able to control the clock and take the pressure off your defense. As physically overmatched as we were against Florida and LSU, if we'd been able to run the ball even a little bit, we probably would have won both games.

Ahhh, the flavor of the month.
Hamilton messed up by not getting us Butch Davis last year so I had to give some name. I do think Schiano would probably pull a couple of 5* recruits this year if announced before signing day. It's just a name.

Hat, you are out there? Any chance Randy Shannon is walking around w/o a job in December? Would he be a good head coach?

flavor of the month... I hate the argument that who can we get that is better. if everyone looked at it that way, no coaches will ever be fired. is there a chance that we get a coach that doesn't succeed? yes there is. but it's a risk you gotta take. do your hw and get the best possible coach. fulmer is what fulmer is and to think he can't be replaced baffles me

i will say beating uk and vandy are a given, in the sense that fulmer and co. right now I've been saying fulmer gets til 08 to give UT a SEC Championship or he's gone. If he loses to uk or vandy, and the powers that be aren't going to fire him at all this year, he had better

You sure read a lot into my 4 word post. :dunno:

All I said was that Schiano has suddenly become the "hot" coach that everyone is talking about sort of like Pat Hill and Mike Leach the past couple of years. That's all.

sorry GA, i wasn't necessarily blasting your post, just the general theory that we cant find someone. i don't know that schiano is the answer. i honestly truly believe him that he won't leave rutgers, yet anyways. i do however think we can easily find a coach who can give us consistent 9-4, 10-3 seasons

Randy Shannon will probably be unemployed. I'm not his biggest fan. My position would be that he's a very good position coach. Adding any more responsibility to him is probably asking for trouble.

Is that really what you wanted to say? I thought the argument was that those numbers were not good enough, therefore we needed new blood to win us that there Conference championship game.

9-4 10-3 you have right now. 11-2 13-0 is what a new guy will give us.....right???

i was referring to the fact that it would be easy to get a coach that can get us these 9-4, 10-3 seasons, so it's worth making the risk of getting a really good coach who can turn us back into a 1st tier SEC team. so many people think we can't do better than fulmer, when those coaches are everywhere, every year that can get his results

Now that's the position I'm accustomed to hearing around here these days....
