Doesn't the U.S. govt issue social security numbers to everyone in this country who is working legally?

Wouldn't that be a better count then hiring a bunch of U.S. census workers to go door to door?

Seems like a waste of money.

Seeing its in the Constitution I'd say yes. That being said, I only answer the question stating I live here. If Obama wants to know my income he can talk to Timmy at the IRS

i think you'd be surprised to see how much census numbers are used in business forcasting. they are a very valuable resource. it's not just an account of how many people we have.

Constitutionally mandated if memory serves me correctly. Plus it is how we apportion members of Congress and all sorts of federal funds. There are pros and cons to both sides of the debate.

I'm still waiting for ACORN and the SEIU to knock on my door to make sure I'm counted.

And don't forget it helps the unemployment numbers - employing over 1 million on a temporary basis. The timing of the census and the recession is 'perfect'. Give it three months and ask what happens to those people once they get dumped back into the unemployed pool.

And they are proof of the migration taking place from the utopian blue state workers' paradise of the northeast to the evil, Bible belt, fascist red states in the south.

It's also about redistricting, gerrymandering and meting out of gov't largesse.

You, like Obama, want to pick and choose the parts of the constitution we follow?

for some reason i enjoy polls and surveys, so the census is fine. ever since 1992 when, with some coordination, we convinced the powers that be that a majority of the fifth grade was sexually active and experimenting with hard drugs, i have loved surveys

That's the same argument used to not give women the right to vote and to own slaves. Fortunately we had constitutional amendments.

In this environment I doubt many amendments find their way through the system. And one concerning the census would definitely fall under 'not a priority'.

Agree on both points. Like anything the government touches though, it's grown and morphed beyond its original purpose.

And from experience, it could easily be streamlined to become cheaper and more efficient. Most of the people who work in the field are not qualified to be computing and collecting information that affects so many people.

The irony is that OP meant this as a knock on Obama but it turns out the census is mandated by the Constitution, which OP would have you believe is the motivation for his own politics.

Makes me laugh.

He wasn't knocking Obama, you hypersensitive, melodramatic girly man.

I am starting to believe the brand new notion that I just made up: "fanbases do reflect their favorite head football coach."

No, it was a knock on unnecessary, wasteful spending in Washington.

electing Congress is Constitutional but it still doesn't justify the idiocy that comes from it...

No, Obama is just the latest in a long line of wasteful spending presidents. It doesn't help that he's creating deficits that dwarfs any seen before him.

Which you see primarily (as in 90 % fault) caused by Democrats and, at this point in time, all linked to Obama.

Correct?

Why wouldn't it be, after all Democrats have had just short of complete control for some time, since Obama has been in office they have had control and set the agenda. Why should the fault be directed in any other direction at this point?
