Do we not have the NIL to compete?

They aren’t killing us. There’s not much that separate the classes once you get into the top ten. Not to mention, for the most part signing a top ten class is a recruiting success and comes down to coaching and development after that.

Look at some of the classes that Butch signed and accomplished diddly squat with.

Michigan has Larry Ellison now and is supposedly going to have $50 million a year to use for NIL. Since he's worth around $150B, it's not really an issue for him.

While Spyre has done great, the stakes are getting pretty steep to attract and keep the biggest talent. We need a mega-billionaire angel even wealthier than Thunder or Allan Jones or the Haslams in case anyone has Jeff Bezos or Elon's number.

Bama had 17 5* and 50 4* on their roster while losing to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma.
Brand new coaching staff. The data about the blue chip ratio and success is vast. The teams with the most 4 and 5* players win the most. Also OU and Vandy aren’t in the playoffs. Bama more than likely is.

Yeah we don’t have anyone to compete with Michigan or Oregon

I don’t know what anyone expected. When you make money the primary driver for recruiting, you’re handing recruiting dominance to the programs with the most money. That was always going to be schools like Oregon, OSU, Texas, Michigan, etc. They have larger networks of alumni, and monied alumni, to tap into. Doesn’t mean you won’t have any success, but you will always be in the pack of money schools - not leading them.

The programs with billions backing them will always be able to match or offer more.

5*s don’t always turn out to be 5*s, and 4*s don’t always turn out to be 4*s. These rating companies aren’t always spot on. It appears Heupel and his staff are really good at picking the top recruits who will fit well and thrive in his system. Heupel has recruited nothing but stud running backs in his time here. We have two highly recruited QBs now. Our defense played lights out this year. Sure we have some holes to fill, but Heupel knows what he is doing and is not throwing cash at every Tom, Dick, and Harry out there. We are on the right track, and I trust the guy who won a national championship to know what recruits have the raw, natural talent to get us there. He also appears to be doing this while avoiding the offseason embarrassments we have seen in the past. He’s already proven he can do more with “less” than any coach in the country. He’s just getting started.

Oregon, Florida, Texas, Georgia, bama… they’re killing us in recruiting
I posted a similar comment a couple of days ago and some guy replied and said Instate talent. How is Dan Lanning number 1 with no instate talent? So I see your point. Last I checked, we were number 2 in NIL so I am confused. I am not being a negative vol fan just think we should be better.

Agree we need to recruit better if we want to consistently make the playoffs

That's true but historically the teams that recruit at the highest levels: Bama, GA, Ohio State, Clemson have a boatload of trophies between them and are routinely at the top of the recruiting heap also.

Coincidence? Doubtful.

We need to be at least in the top 5 in recruiting to be consistently in the hunt for a trophy.

Coach Heupel has said many times, character and fit are important as well. We are not in a position to take a chance on a high profile recruits that could end up like Janzen Jackson or Nu'Keese Richardson giving the program another public embarrassment.
That's my take. Our recruiting is outstanding

Heupel's recruiting has been steadily improving every year he's been here. Another 10 win season should help keep that trend alive. He's done a good job of improving the roster. Still thin in a few spots but I like where the program is headed over all.
