Do we see change???

I agree but when I see OSU replace nine starters.......
Couldn't be more on the money. While other top tear teams reload, we attempt to work like heck and rebuild. Once again proof of a steady decline in the program.

Exactly what new defensive strategy would have made up for our lack of quality personnel on the defensive line? Also, what strategy would have kept Fellows and Inky from season ending injuries in our defensive backfield?

Our chance, talent wise, to win the SEC and possibly play for a National Title was 2005. I will definitely chalk the 2005 UT performance up to poor coaching. However, if we had gone 13-0 in 2005, we still struggle to go 10-2 this season.

I will say that the 3rd and long conversions upset me considerably. No matter how inexperienced the team is, by November, that should not happen.

But for those that say that the talent is bare since 2000 and that Chavis has not put out decent defenses? Here is the defensive line starters since 2001 and how they faired against the run.

2001
LE Bernard Jackson (sr)
LT John Henderson (sr)
RT Albert Hayneworth (jr)
RE Will Overstreet (sr)

All 4 linemen played the following season in the NFL. 3 of them were drafted. The 2002 group had experience.... but not starting experience. In 2001, the Vols held opponents to 85 yards rushing per game.

2002
LE Omari Hand (sr)
LT Rashad Moore (sr)
RT Aubrayo Franklin (sr)
RE Demetrin Veal (sr)

For the 2nd straight season, all 4 defensive linemen went on to play in the NFL as 3 of them were drafted. Amazing after only starting 1 season. Opponents' rushing increased to 129 ypg.

2003
LE Parys Haralson (so)
LT J.T. Mapu (so)
RT Mondre Dickerson (sr)
RE Constantin Ritzmann (sr)

Replaced all 4 starters for the 2nd straight season.... This 2003 group allowed 138 yds rushing per game. 2 of them are still at UT. Ritzmann went onto the NFL, while Dickerson had legal problems and currently plays in the Arena Football League.

2004
LE Parys Haralson (jr)
LT Jesse Mahelona (jr)
RT Justin Harrell (so)
RE Karlton Neal (sr)

Only 1 starter returns from the previous season. This group (2004) still allowed fewer rushing yards per game (120 ypg) than the previous 2 seasons. Haralson and Mahelona are in the NFL. Harrell is still at UT. Neal is a sports trainer.

2005
LE Parys Haralson (sr)
RT Justin Harrell (jr)
LT Jesse Mahelona (sr)
RE Jason Hall (sr)

Returning 3 of 4 starters on the defensive line for the first time in I don't know how many years, the Vols held opponents to only 82 rushing yards per game.... 2nd best in UT history.

I for one am ready for a change on Defense. I think it is time for a new strategy and direction for us to try a obtain. The thing is.......is Chavis safe because of Fulmer?? I really wonder that, because I think Sanders was kinda hung out to dry. GRANTED the offensive collapse was 75% his fault, but Fulmer really didn't try to save his skin. We had an AWESOME year offensively except for running the ball sometimes, but the Defense was really never suspect for big plays just allowing way too many first downs. Like the first downs to Florida and LSU. WE REALLY SHOULD HAVE WON THOSE GAMES!!! The thing is our D played 5-10 yards off their receivers and our LB's stayed in zone WAY TOO MUCH. As physical as the SEC is this type of D will get you exploited and you may be on the field over half the game, just like we were this year. Just thought I would see how many of you really want a change before next year and see what you would suggest Chavis do VERY Differnent for next year ( if he survives the off-season) if he is around.

There you go. Hate him or love him, Sanders was the biggest goat at the crosseyed redneck love fest. The biggest scam in the CYA class. Sanders was never the OC. He just held the title. CPF was the OC. Sanders called the plays CPF told him to. RS never was given 100% control and play calling of hte O. The few games it was pubically known that RS actually called a game with liberties during his tenure, we actually looked good. All that other boring ineffective crap was CPF.

Chief has one bad year as a DC and you want to fire him? Foolish, foolish post. Chief if your reading this or anyone who knows him is reading this. Please just laugh. This guys doesn't understand football and doesn't want to take into account the age and the major loss due to injury.

Those are some pretty impressive numbers, although to be fair the linebacking corps has something to do with rush defense, as well. In comparison, in 2006, UT allowed 143.7 rushing yards per game, with everyone who saw significant playing time on the line returning. I hope a year's experience pays big dividends.
