Do You Expect a Let Down?

Do you expect to be let down by Tennessee's coaching hire?

Unfortunately, after the last few years of watching our admin completely screw up our program I have little faith that we're going to be happy with who they hire.

Yes, and it is not about Gruden.

There just seems to be too many bad signs.

Hart held on to Dooley too long
Hart seems in no hurry to solve this, even as other schools come open.
Who has he hired? Ever?
Administration problems have bled the football program almost as much as anything else.

All of these could be meaningless if Hart has his man and is just waiting.

But my thought is that he is scrambling and we will end up being let down.
It honestly feels like groundhog day.

Over and over and over and over again...

Yes. It's scary when you hear names like Al Golden thrown around a lot after more money was allocated to the coaching search.

I'm more in the category of "Kinda, sorta, maybe, not real sure, but hoping that I'm not disappointed".

The more openings that become available, the more unsure I become.

This.

Seems to me that Hart expected to give Dooley another year until the losses to Mizzou & Vandy. Now he is completely unprepared and competing against a lot of other schools and just now conducting interviews. Taking that into consideration and the fact that we have never had a home run hire, and the outlook is not positive. Look at how we hired Dooley in the first place. We were turned down by multiple coaches. Yes, I realize that situation was a little different, but it is still the Tennessee job and I have no faith in Hart at the moment.

Just because it's not Gruden doesn't make it a let down... Now Dykes or someone of that nature would be really dissapointing. But I think Dave Hart and the boosters know this, and aren't gonna let it happen. They're not dumb. This isn't like after Kiffin where we could get away with a mediocre hire. It won't fly now... And they know that.

No, but we are a jaded fanbase who expects the worse, so I'm thinking the votes will go to the yes column in far greater numbers.

can we just hire someone already. I know im being impatient but I cant handle it anymore. If its Gruden ill cry ill be so happy. If its strong or golden or either butch, i may lose all hope that we will ever be able to catch back up with the SEC elite. I just need an answer so i can stop reading this board 17 hours a day........go vols

you could think "No way they screw this up" and feel confident in a good hire but recent history shows you massive fails so I don't think anyone would be shocked if we get screwed again.

For those that are on the Gruden or bust wagon, then they may get let down.

I do think they (Hart and boosters) will look to get the best coach that they can with money not being an issue. Not all the top notch coaches are looking to move, but I'm sure that there are a few that would do it if the money is right.

Yes,,It'll just be another retread but Hart's head will roll as a result. They'll hire a new AD with promises of change.

I am actually optimistic that big money will prevail. Here's why:

I am guessing based on announced attendance numbers this year that there was somewhere in the neighborhood of 80,000 tickets that did not get sold.

So if you go with $40 a ticket, that's $3.2 million. Add additional concessions, parking charges, donations associated with season ticket purchases and other misc. incomes, and it's not unreasonable to think that the university left well over $4 million on the table this year alone.

The apathy with the football program is, by far, at an all-time high that I can recall in my 40+ year life time, and there is no reason to think that will change unless a hire is made that sparks interest.

It is possible, even likely, that there is an unknown coach out there who is very capable of building the program back to the level of excellence that fans expect. But, we all know that is going to take 3-5 years, and until then, the apathy would continue. Based on the math above, I don't think the powers that be are willing to leave that $20 million unclaimed even if they have to share a chunk of it with someone like John Gruden or another household name.

I would not be surprised to hear Dave Hart announce: "to get the football program back to where it needs to be we have decided to make al golden/charlie strong the highest paid football coach in the NCAA."

I think that administration's priorities have changed. When I was there, no one gave a crap about "green space" it was all about having a place to park!

Now they want to be an academic school.

Let's be real. Most kids go to UT because it's in state or they want to watch sports and have a good time, while getting an education.
